Today, Anakin was a little bit grateful for the cloak he habitually wore as he waited for his class to arrive outside on the border between Fandom and the Viking village. It was a little chilly for a guy who grew up in the desert

Tahiri was . . . well, she was here, let's say that. A couple of hours in a meditative trance meant she didn't look like she'd been crying, but she wasn't exactly bright and cheerful.
Yuuzhan Vong might know how to channel physical pain into strength, but if there was a way to do that for the emotional variety she hadn't figured it out yet.

Ben had asked her to tell people, but this was going to be hard, Tahiri realized.
"It's Ben," she answered quietly. "I heard from him today. Daala -- the Chief of State -- sentenced Luke to ten years' exile from Coruscant unless he can prove there won't be another Jacen."
She swallowed, and tried to meet his eyes. "Ben's going with him."

Anakin would take a moment to hit something really hard about Luke's sentence later, but right now he'd deal with the pain in front of him. "Oh, Tahiri, I'm sorry."

Tahiri would do a number on a practice dummy over that herself, when she wasn't so worn out from trying to keep herself together.
"So am I," she said, trying to muster up a smile. It wasn't quite there, but at least the effort was obvious. "I suppose I could think of it as at least being final enough to not leave any doubt, but . . ."
It was too early for that kind of rationalization.

Tahiri could still remember, fairly vividly, the look on Anakin's face when he'd confronted her about what the other version of her had done to Ben, and warned her not to do the same; it didn't seem real now, and she gave in to the need for comfort.
"Only a few hours," she admitted thickly. "It's still sinking in."

It suddenly hit Anakin that he was almost alone again on the island. Jaina and Ben, both gone just like that, and Leia was devoting herself doggedly to the Rebellion...it was lonely.
"Well, when it sinks in, find me," he murmured. "Any time."

"Jaina's gone," Tahiri replied quietly, unwittingly echoing that thought. "Don't be surprised if I do."

Tahiri gave him a grateful look. "Thank you. I suppose we should keep an eye on the students for now, though."
