Monomyths [Tuesday, January 12, Period 3]

"We're going to start today by talking about your final," Cindy announced as soon as class began. "I know it seems like a long way away, but if you look at the syllabus I handed out last week, you'll realize it's only about fourteen weeks away and the nature of the final requires a lot of advanced prep work." The grin she flashed the class was more ( Read more... )

Masculine or feminine (and don't be restricted by gender!)

Taking notes is encouraged. So is asking questions.

Other activities not so encouraged, but good luck trying.

Gabrielle, luckily, had at some point invested in actual notebooks even though she hated the flimsy paper and its funny lines (she ignored those anyway). She'd have run out of scroll parchment fast in this class. Her notebook, as it was, was crammed to the margins.

Ugh. They had to do a report on Wendy? Did they realize all the stuff that glamorized? Angela supposed next they'd have to do an oral report on Barry Plodder, too.

Claire took notes and idly wondered if she could get away with doing her final project on Ninth Wonders. Or would that be cheating since it was based in part on her own life?

"Going with the very basic generalizations on the board, can you categorize your life as one or the other? Have you had an experience that was a mini-journey all it's own ( ... )

Looking incredibly intimidated by the whole thing, Tara cradled Kennedy-the-hedgehog in her palms, as if drawing strength from her. "Feminine journey?" she finally ventured, as if expecting to be told she was wrong. "My -- my family told me something about me that wasn't true. Something bad. I, um. I kind of s-spent my whole life with it over my head until about three months ago. So -- n-now I have to make my way to being more in power."

She didn't sound like she was doing so great with it, but that was Tara.

Cindy shot the hedgehog a puzzled glance, but decided to address Tara's comments first and then get to the hedgehog later.

"Finding out that a major part of their life has been a lie is the usual first step in the feminine journey," Cindy agreed, voice gentle. "It can be as simple as the realization that they are not as happy being a wife and mother as they believe or as major as discovering something as potentially life-altering as what you've described."

Dropping her voice a bit, so that Tara alone could hear, Cindy added, "I know what that feels like. If you ever need to talk, I'm in Office Eleven." She gave Tara a brief, understanding smile before asking, "Now, what's with the hedgehog? New pet?"

"I'll remember that," Tara said, though the chances of her bothering an adult she didn't know well about her personal issues were in the zero-to-nonexistent range.

She smiled about the hedgehog, though. "This? This is my girlfriend. Kennedy. She, um ... they told you this happens, right? She just changed all of a sudden last night. I would have left her in my room but we have cats."

Kennedy-the-hedgehog might have thought she could take on the cats. Tara thought differently.

Anemone was totally around, and morbidly amused at being chosen as a TA.

Firekeeper was here, Blind Seer at her side, still a little confused by the whole 'TA' thing.

Jon was there after class, because, well, he missed things last week. "I need to get the syllabus. I missed class last week due to an alien plague."

Cindy just paused for a moment. "What kind of alien plague?" she asked.

She was starting to wonder if the students had just realized that they could get away with anything if they only made their excuses sound crazy enough.

...She didn't doubt Jon--he wasn't displaying any of the signs of telling a lie, for one--but honestly now.

Alien plague.

"The kind used to make the entire bow down and worship said aliens." He shrugged and grinned. "It got fixed though."
