Ethics [Tuesday, January 12, 2nd period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where ( Read more... )

"I have never lost a lightsaber duel. I hate sand. I can fly any ship I ever sat at the controls of."

Based on what your character knows of Anakin, which doesn't seem right?

"I'd say it's the duel one," Bruce said. "Hating sand is a minor detail that doesn't seem worth lying about. And if you can pilot one ship, it would be reasonable that you could adapt to another one. But it's been drilled into me that no matter how good you are, there's always someone better." Bruce had yet to disprove that notion, so he was willing to believe it for the time being. "So what are the odds that you've never fought someone better?"

Discussion question [1/12] sith_happened January 12 2010, 04:22:30 UTC
Does lying serve a purpose? When does it stop being a tool and start being a crutch?

"Lying serves the purpose of whoever wields the lie," Layla replied with a shrug. "It's used to manipulate people to get whatever that person wants. Sometimes it's altruistic. Sometimes it's selfish. Sometimes it's both. Once you cross that line though, the lies just get bigger."

"I suppose it can serve a purpose as long as it's used in moderation," said Bod, thinking it over carefully. He didn't like to lie. He'd seen what it could do, could still see Silas getting hit by that car and frowned. "If you overuse, no one's going to be liable to believe you when you finally decide to tell the truth."

"I think it depends a lot on the motivation behind the lie," Claire said. "I haven't told my dad the whole truth about Fandom because I know he wouldn't understand and he would pull me out of school even though I'm learning a lot of useful things here."

Ah yes, the ever-fun assistant gig. If there was anything keeping Griff in the room each week it was the responsibility. Even if he prayed no one asked him about ethics which was totally an invite to.

Effy didn't necessarily have any burning ethical questions, but she did have those few sheets of drawings she'd... 'rescued' from a certain sale. "Not bad," she told him, sliding them onto his desk. Wouldn't have put it past Alex to bin the lot if no one picked them up.

Griff eyed the drawings for a moment. Karev had gotten his attention with the stunt, but it had more served the purpose of Griff going nowhere near the room since. "Take it you enjoyed the hall sale, then?"

And Leia wouldn't want to disappoint. Actually, she'd considered ignoring him this week, but the whole lying thing got her twitchy.

"So you must think lying serves a purpose," she said.

"In very specific cases, yes," Anakin said, nodding.

"To protect someone," Leia had to grudgingly agree. Because she'd lie to protect those she cared about. "But what about when someone is capable of deciding whether they need that protection or not?"
