"By now," Mohinder started from his perch on the desk at the front of the classroom, "You should all have some idea of how complex a machine is the human body. As long as it's still healthy and functional that's fine. But it does mean there are almost countless ways for it to break down ( Read more... )

You can only afford one of the following -

- Treatment for bowel cancer - will benefit 10 people - gaining 35 years of life total.
- Drug reducing fatal heart attacks in a genetic group - will benefit 15 people - gaining 30 years of life total.
- Equipment to up survival rates of brain surgery - will benefit 2 people - by a total of 16 years of life.

Which one should you choose?

Cal, finding this particular class very ironic for a person who very blatantly turned his back and ran away from an available surgery, thought about it carefully before voicing his opinion.

"Treating bowel cancer," he decided. "The brain one's too rare and people can die quick of a heart attack. But having cancer of the bowels? Good God. Probably slow, painful, annoying, and embarrassing, too, because it's your bowels."

He thought it was an incredibly good argument, thank you.

Sokka put up a hand. "You didn't say anything about the QUALITY of life these people could expect once they were treated," he pointed out. "That's kind of important. I'm not gonna give someone 10 years on their life if they're gonna spend it in lots of pain."

"Yeah," Chris agreed. "I think quality of life is incredibly important."

He's around during and after class, if wondering why people with money available for funding obscure branches of genetics always seem to have an ulterior motive.
