American History, Period 2 02/12

Students might have noticed that, instead of that stuffy old classroom, their History class was being held in the Danger Shop today, where there was a table with a selection of peanuts, Cracker Jack, and soft drinks for the students to help themselves to at their leisure. Beyond the table, there was a simple wooden bench, and then a field, with a ( Read more... )

Who would much rather have Cracker Jack than human blood, thank you very much.

"Algren-sensei?" Ino asked, approaching after class.

"Yes, Miss Yamanaka?" Algren inclined his head slightly to acknowledge that he was being spoken to. Heck, he was there to be spoken to. And he'd even talk back.

"I just wanted to apologize," and thank goodness this was the last one, "for missing class last week. I got called home suddenly and didn't have time to leave messages."

"Some sort of emergency?" He raised an eyebrow, and then nodded faintly. "You'll be expected to catch up on the lost lesson, you realize," he noted. "I can give you my notes on the American Civil War, if that will help, or else you can speak with a classmate to see what you've missed."

Algren always took very, very detailed notes. It was a thing.

"I was needed for a mission," she said, not sure if she'd ever mentioned that to him before.

Ino nodded. "I'd rather your notes, if you don't mind." She knew her classmates, and his notes had to be better than most of the rest.

"A mission?" Evidentially, no, he didn't know much about Ino's missions at all. "Walk with me. My notes are in my bag, under the table."

Which wasn't all that far, but if he was going to be digging out his notebook, he figured she could handle the short hike.

"Sure," she said, shrugging and falling into pace beside him. "And, yeah, missions. I'm a, uh, ninja? So I get missions, jobs really, that I'm assigned by our Hokage, and have to go and do them no matter what they are."

"No matter what, hm?" He reached the table and kneed down, pulling a small leather bag out from under it and undoing the rawhide laces holding it shut. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but I find myself curious how exactly a ninja differs from a samurai. I don't know as much as I might like about Japanese culture."

... Or wherever she was from, for that matter.

That got a shrug. "No matter what, of course, depends on your rank. Hokage-sama doesn't assign missions she doesn't think the team can handle."

A beat.

"And, I don't know 'bout actual Japanese stuff, but in our world ninja are more cohesive, and more reliant on our spiritual energy to back us up. We tend to wear less armour too. Samurai tend to specialize in a weapon or two, and tend to work alone, from what I know. Ninja are better."

Of course, Ino was incredibly biased. She was allowed to be, she figured.

Of course. Different worlds. So Algren couldn't rely too strictly on Ino's account of the samurai, for obvious reasons. Still and all, the distinction she drew between the two was a fascinating one.

"Both are warriors, then," he noted, pulling a modern looking coil-ring notebook from his bag and flipping through it. "With different proficiencies and fighting styles."

Which was typically the way things went, so far as warriors were concerned.

"And the missions you do, I assume you've been trained adequately before being sent off on them?"

"And different loyalties," she amended. "Ninja are centralized in their own villages and all take orders from their leaders--not that the ninja villages are, uh, peaceful between each other, but we're all built on the same lines. And Samurai just... they're more 'lone agents'."

She shrugged a bit at that. "We start official training when we're five." Ino didn't know if he'd consider that adequate, or not. It was in her world.

It seemed more adequate than some cases he'd been made aware of already this week, so for Algren, 'training since five' would suffice. While he would prefer children didn't have to learn such things at all, he did happen to live in the real world, and he understood that sometimes, it just wasn't possible.

"Doing work on their own terms, instead of on the orders of the... Hokage." He had to try the word out. New words in different languages always intrigued him. And then he held the book toward her, smiling slightly.

"Notes," he said, as though this fact wasn't obvious. "On all of the classes thus far this semester. You can return it to me tomorrow during my office hours, or next week before the midterm."

And really, she shouldn't be surprised if there were somewhat cynical opinions about the subjects covered, scrawled in the margins throughout.

She took the book, tucking it under one arm. "Thank you," Ino said, grinning a bit. "And it's only our village with a Hokage--it's really two words combined so the first one varies by village you're referring to. 'Ho' and 'kage' mean 'fire shadow', because we're from the Fire Country. Wind Country, on the other hand has a Kazekage--a wind shadow."

"Ho, fire. Kaze, wind. Kage, shadow," Algren repeated thoughtfully, getting a feel for the words on his tongue. Japanese or something like it had an interesting rhythm to it. It intrigued him, really. "Thank you."

A beat.

"And if any of your classmates feel the need to approach you for assistance studying for the midterm next week, feel free to allow them to take notes from the book as well. I would hate for anyone to get the false notion that I'm playing favorites."

"I'll let them, for sure," she said easily, totally fine with that. "And no problem. Thanks for the notes!"

She grinned. "And if you ever want more words, I guess you could bug me for them. It's close enough that, aside from festivals and things, I'm able to talk with just fine people who're actually from Japan."
