"Manifest Destiny," Algren said, launching into the lecture the moment the last student's butt hit their seat. Tyler stood back and observed this week; it was clear to him that Algren had the subject well in hand

"Look on the bright side," she chirped, rolling her eyes at his reaction. "You have utterly nothing to do with that proclamation this time. So you get a pass into awesome territory for free."

"Forever at the moment," Cal repeated, because it had to be, just as it had to be followed with a look at Ino that questioned if she realized how dumb that sounded.

She was fifteen; she was allowed to sound stupid. Not that she'd admit it.
"Forever," she explained, because clearly he was being slow today, "but I might forgive him later, so it's got 'at the moment' added to the end of it. And we had a fight 'bout how apparently if I want to know what's up in his life I've got to give him a totally itemized detailed list rather than a general 'what's up'. 'Cause apparently 'what's new and exciting' or 'what's up in Liir-land' don't, you know, cover 'having a girlfriend' and stuff when I was pretty sure both those sentences covered it just fine."

Cal took a moment to go back in his memory to check and see if he'd mentioned having a girlfriend. He was pretty sure he did. He knew Ino had scoped Claire out, and then made fun of him about it, so that seemed a clear enough yes to feel safe.
He nodded. "Let me guess," he said, "it was you who got mad because he didn't say it and not that he got mad because you were fishing for information."

"Asking what's up with someone has got to be the most mild form of 'fishing for information' ever," she insisted, wrinkling her nose at him because he was totally right. "And, I mean, I asked it every time I saw him, so it wasn't like he didn't see me and then it just became old news. But, seriously, it's not like I was asking for details or anything--it just would've been nice to not find out from radio 'bout it. And then he said I'm not one to talk 'bout keeping relationships from people and when I asked him what relationship I was hiding, he didn't answer."

And then grinned. "So who's the idiot this time?"

"What'd he do?"
