QUESTION 1 - CANDIDATES ONLY medusae_x October 7 2005, 00:24:23 UTC
1. Everyone at school talks big about diversity, yet non-human students have been used as scapegoats in the campaign, have been treated as criminals before being proven as such, and are made to feel like second-class citizens, especially those who aren't pretty enough to be considered "passing." Can you outline your plan to prevent further discrimination?

I think that it's simply a matter of treating all students fairly and equally, regardless of appearance or genetic make-up. The administration has shown a no tolerance policy for discrimination and persecution and I think advocating support of that policy is the best path.

I don't think that it even needs to be said that I oppose discrimination in all its forms- some of my best friends aren't exactly human, and I myself am not your typical girl. However, I really think that it's important that all the students realize that fear and hatred aren't going to help anyone.
As secretary, I think that I could help this by publicizing any efforts the school makes to decrease animosity between groups. I mean, if some of the students who are more, shall we say, unkind, were to realize that they were pretty much alone in their opinions and that their opinions had no actual basis or support in fact, I honestly think that it could help to ease tensions.

"Discrimination is tyranny of the highest form. Each being, be they vampire, demon, alien, mutant, or other, has a right to freedom from the oppression that so many students feel day in and day out. As President, I would lead the council to develop student policies that uphold the freedom of all to live in a hate-free environment, as well as peer counseling for any disagreements that arise."

2. Rewind to a few weeks ago. Students are freaked, rumors are flying, students and teachers are packing: Fandom High smacked down with a weapons ban. But for a moment pretend you're Principal Connor. What would you have done to take care of the school?

Instituted a mandatory expulsion policy for anyone who directly threatened the life of another student or of a teacher. Secondly, I would have made that punishment cut both ways and forced any teacher promoting such behavior or threatening a student to resign. Violence has no place in an academic setting and should be limited to extra-curricular activites or hobbies.

I don't think that the weapons ban was all that bad of an idea- this is a high school, not a battlefeild. While some students may not get along, these problems shouldn't be solved by some sort of 'my sword is bigger than your sword' dick-measuring contest. You attack someone or threaten them with a weapon at school, you should be expelled- and teachers who do so should be fired.

"Exactly the same. The only freedom that comes from the barrel of a gun is one of destruction, and I will not abide that. Students who enjoy their weaponry may do so off-campus or on the firing range. Weapons serve as yokes to the encroaching forces of mediocrity. Revel in your individuality that can only be expressed when you are without such crutches!"

QUESTION 3 - CANDIDATES ONLY medusae_x October 7 2005, 00:27:14 UTC
3. Half of life at Fandom High is dealing with its capricious nature. Parties can be cancelled for zombie attacks, quiet hours can be broken for gremlin infestation, and classes can be missed by traveling too closely to locker 327. Do you think such capriciousness should continue to be carried into the way punishments (one week's detention is 24 hours of psychological torture, the next week's is bug experiments) are decided and implemented at school?

Given the diverse nature of the student body, I can't think of any punishment that would be fair all the way across the board. As it stands, the eclectic nature of punishment here at Fandom High is nothing more than a reflection of standard operating procedure among the students as well as school policy. Also considering the wildly varied nature of the offenses, I don't think that the punishment of unusual detention is at all unfair.

I don't think that the vastly different nature of detention from week to week is acceptable- some students even got to leave the bug detention early, which is insane- it's a punishment because you did something wrong.
Coming from the education system in my world, I honestly don't see why detention can't be a simple 'sit in a room and waste your free time' deal. If you really want to be fair, there should be time limits for different offences- blowing up something is worse than, say, cursing in the hallway.

"I must sadly admit that I spent an afternoon in detention a great while ago. I found the experience to be quite educational, and I have yet to make a repeat trip. Force the student to face their crime and the root from which that crime comes, and you will free them from the internal shackles of anger and hatred."

QUESTION 4 - CANDIDATES ONLY medusae_x October 7 2005, 00:27:39 UTC
4. It's now four weeks past the election. You've been elected to your position and most of the student body has gone back to their everyday lives of ignoring student government. How will you implement your plans in a way that will make the rest of the student body care about what the student council does?

This is a difficult question when it comes to Academic Affairs as most of the duties are behind the scenes and deal with things like proposed changes to school club funding and how to best integrate transfer students into the general population. I would have to say that making the office and its function more visible would be a good first step, with voice mail and e-mail and possibly a link to various projects on the school web page.

As secretary, I think that that's part of the job- the students can't care unless they're informed. I think that using all of the different forms of media available on campus to inform students of what the student council is doing, and why it's important to them- they could be raising funds for something that benefits students, which everyone would want to support, or changes in academic policies, which everyone should know about. So, in short, telling people what's going on will inevitably create interest.

"The only way to keep the attention of the student body is to effect changes, both large and small, that will keep the council in their thoughts. That is why part of my campaign is the lowering of vending machine prices. It may seem like a trifling thing, but the students will be thankful, and once I have their attention over that, I can move on to larger issues, such as the peer counseling and the tunneling club."

5. What is the function of the office you are running for? No, the *literal* function. Prove to the students you actually know what the job entails.

Re: QUESTION 5 - CANDIDATES ONLY addams_daughter October 7 2005, 01:07:41 UTC
The Liason for Academic Affairs is responsible for keeping the student body informed of things like attendance and grading policies, the availability of opportunites or funds for student clubs, the presence of scholarships, internships and apprenticeships in their chosen fields of study and to keep communication between the administration and the student body on any academic topic both easy and open. It's a difficult job and requires attention to detail and a full understanding of how the school operates on a purely academic basis. It is a full-time job and requires a great deal of paperwork and attention to detail. It's a necessary job, but not a terribly exciting one to an outside observer.

The secretary is responsible for keeping minutes of the student council meetings, in order for them to be made public to the student body. They should also coordinate efforts to publicize any initiatives the student council takes, by using the school bulliten boards, loudspeaker, website, radio station, and newspaper.

"The position of the President is one of great importance, and not to be taken lightly. He is to act as the liaison between the administration and the students, to be the voice and face of his peers to the outside world. In the event of a disagreement between our, ah, hosts and the students, the President should work for an amicable compromise. He is a person that the student body can go to for guidance and with any issues they may have with their day-to-day schooling."
