As the students filed in, the might notice that the statuesque blond standing at the front of the classroom was not their normal teacher.

"Good morning,” she said, her voice carrying effortlessly.  “I am Lady Ghanima Atreides, and I have been tasked with teaching your class for the remainder of the term.  You may call me Lady Ghanima or Miss Ghanima ( Read more... )

Aly found her way to the classroom just as the period ended and leaned against the doorway, waiting for Ghanina to become free enough to notice her.

Ghani had noticed the instant that the other woman had entered the room, acknowledging her with a slight nod.

As the last of the children left the classroom, she walked over to where Aly was lounging. "Somehow, I doubt you're one of my students."

Aly chuckled. "No, just another teacher. The school likes to assign a teacher who's been here for a while to help out new arrivals. I'm Aly."

"Thank the Maker, someone to save my sanity!" Ghanima laughed. "Ghanima Atreides, although I'm sure you already knew that. I'm not sure what made anyone think I should be teaching children, but here I am."

"Join the club," Aly said easily. "Half the people here wouldn't have imagined teaching before they arrived. But here we are."

"I don't even know any children," Ghani said wryly. "This is my brother's idea of a joke. He likes to think he's funny."

"So then, Aly-who-teaches, what do you teach?" she asked, leaning against the wall easily. "What exactly have I gotten myself in to?"

"Brothers," Aly rolled her eyes. "They're so convinced they're helpful. Right now I have a class on protection, earlier I've taught spying and revolutions." She gave a quick grin. "So all manner of things. It's not precisely a school like others. Most of the students here have experienced more - much more than the average child. They never cease to be surprising."

"Oh? Good. I hear normal children are boring. I hate boring." Ghani inspected her nails idly. "How did you get the class on revolution? I want that class instead. Career Choices seems a bit mundane...maybe I'll have to give a lecture next week on how to be a successful revolutionary."

"Miss Connell had mentioned that the island was 'interesting'," she looked up and smirked at Aly. "Between you and my students, I'm getting the impression she may have understated the situation?"

"Miss Connell's still new to the island," Aly replied. "This is a place of short interludes of almost bucolic peace interspersed with utter madness. It's a good place if you don't like boring." She raised an eyebrow but looked pleased. "I'll have to stop by to hear your lecture if you do."

"Careful, or I'll use you as an example." Ghani's blue eyes flared brighter for a moment with private amusement. "The most successful revolutionary is the living one, as I'm sure you know. A live specimen is always useful when teaching an object lesson."

"I make it a point never to be an object lesson," she said teasingly.

"Then what sort of lesson do you make a point of being?" Ghani returned, teasingly. "Can one teach without some objectiveness regarding a subject? Otherwise it merely becomes indoctrination."

The new teacher had a mind that wasn't completely easy to access, and River observed her quietly. What she could see was oddly familiar, as was the way Ghanima's mind managed to keep River away from anything that wasn't on the surface.

Ghani was not unaware of being observed, she would be a poor Fremen if she missed something as simple as that.

She smiled encouragingly at the young girl. "Yes, Miss Tam?"

River blinked. "Nothing, Lady Ghanima." The smile was good though. "Do you know a girl here named Irulan Corrino?"
