River knew about this in theory. She picked up some dry twigs and leaves, then found a stone. She tried creating sparks by striking the stone against her pen knife.

"That's why we've got this," Claire said, nodding at the twigs she'd set up first.
Sheltering the flane with her hand, and completely mindless of the heat, she brought the bark over a short way and touched it to a few places around the fire.

"We are," River agreed, seeming to not pay attention to how close Claire's hand was to the flame. She held the twigs close to the glowing bark, mmaking them catch fire. "Feed it and it grows."

"Yeah, I got the metaphor," Claire said, teasing lightly.
Watching the fire creep up the various sticks, she put the bark down before the flame actually reached her fingers and leans forward to blow on areas and encourage it.

River added wood to the fire, watching the flames engulf it. "Good," she said. "Gave Irulan a hat. Went to the moon and back and danced on frozen air. You?"

Glancing around, she grabbed one of the twigs and ripped off a stretch of bark, offering that forward to try and catch the sparks.
