Once the students were all assembled, M stood in front of her desk, the screen behind her projecting the current absence list. She surveyed the group before her, looking stern.

Did you use the voice changer to imitate someone, per last week's assignment? Report on your activities to M.

(Hargrove, you'll want to report on your particular assignment here as well.)

Annette walked slowly forward. About as slowly as a person could walk.

"Good morning, M." She snapped to attention and stared straight ahead.

"Hargrove," M intoned, giving Annette no indication as to whether or not she was pleased with the knowledge she already had about the assignment.

Well, all right, she looked as utterly displeased as always.

"Yes?" Best to just answer direct questions.

M arched an eyebrow. "Report on your assignment, Hargrove."

"My assignment, right. I handwavily used the voice changer to call my mom, pretending to be my dad. You see, I had his voice recorded on my answering machine." Quick smile. "And she believed me! Can you believe that? As dad, I told her that I was limiting her spending allowance and wanted my own bedroom cause she snores and passes gas during the night. It was hilariously funny." She grinned and was being totally and obviously evasive about her other, more meaningful assignment.

"Think I would like to have one of those voice changers. Wow."

"I'm sure you would," M replied dryly. "The other assignment, Hargrove. I want to hear your assessment of it."

"Oh, that assignment." She wrung her hands and looked...out the window. If there was one.

"Um, well, I think it went very well. I fooled a lot of people." Into thinking I was crazy. "My lying techniques were exceptional."

She paused and glanced at M. "Was there anything else you wanted me to add to that?"

M eyed her. "Are you attempting to lie to me now, Hargrove?"

Then, because she knew the girl really had tried, M added, "You did put your heart into it, I'll give you that. And I think perhaps you learned a valuable lesson on how lying isn't as easy as just giving a person false information?"

"No." She put on her best lying straight face ever.

Then she nodded emphatically. "Yes. I learned that very well. It is all about the physical and mental too. I think had I actually looked like Blair, I would have been able to do a better job of it."

"The appearance is part of it, yes. But you can't discount thorough knowledge of your subject, and the confidence to carry it off. Also, the more your target knows about the subject you're imitating, the more thorough you're going to need to be in your own work." M gave Annette a curt nod. "I would say that although you weren't entirely successful, you did at least learn something. You may come to my office tomorrow, and we'll discuss my end of the bargain."

She smiled. "Thank you, M."

Annette was very pleased and turned around and walked neatly back to her desk. One day, she was going to make the best of spy's. Or certainly have fun trying.

Parker *handwavily* explained how she helped out Anders with his part of the assignment by loaning her voice.

And also, used it to make files of Marvin the Martian.
