Laura stood at the front of the room, clad in one of her more casual sweaters -- green -- and a pair of jeans. Atop her head was a green santa hat with white fur adorning the headband and fuzzball. It seemed she was enjoying this new holiday ( Read more... )

Part Two: What did you like about the class, and what didn't you like about the class? In other words, where is there room for improvement?

Cally's bitterness having been burnt off on the first question, she praised the class for being fun, but said that her struggles to understand the bigger pictures of governmental relations were due to her own faults of character, not an inability of the teacher.

The debating was a lot of fun, Anders wrote. I wish we'd had a little more time to do that, though I get that we might not have understood it as much without the stuff we learned beforehand. Also, and I'm just speaking for me here, sometimes the situations we were dealing with in class were a little . . . I mean, I understand the whole survival and refugee thing in a general kind of way, but I'm seventeen and my entire life was peaceful until I got here. Interstellar war is kind of a vague concept for me. It might be kind of interesting to maybe start out with one or two debate/council session(s) that talk about stuff we deal with at this school, and then apply the same concepts to the sort of situations we talked about in class. It might help us make the connection a little better.

Then, as a postscript, he added, But I really, really appreciate that you didn't treat us like we were stupid.

Peter wrote about his enjoyment of the group work, but that he almost wished it had been interspersed through the lectures so they could have had time to reflect on their actions and build upon additional information. But he felt he had been very lucky to share a class with the group assigned and with his classmates in general.

Parker mentioned both the material-- learning about new governments, comparing them to Earth-- and the format, which was interesting for both the group work, and the extreme situations.

And hey. Someone needs to be thinking about these things. We now know better than some of our leaders that there are People Out There. Might as well start working out a strategy for dealing with new tourists now.

Schrodinger wrote that he appreciated the debate portion of the class.

He never got a chance to debate back home.
