As the students worked their way into the classroom they would find the usual spread of fruits, breads and cheeses along with tea and hot cider. When everyone was in their seats, Wilson pushed away from the front of the desk, a pile of papers in his hand.
“Good afternoon. I want to start off class with handing out
information regarding our upcoming field trip to Las Vegas. Here you will find a list of room assignments as well as our travel times. Remember please that we leave on Friday, return on Sunday and if you receive a detention in one of your other classes you will not be allowed to go.”
Once he had the sheets out to everybody, Wilson walked back down to the front of the room and hopped up onto the desk.
Lecture:
“Today I want to talk to you about the role of
the King’s Fool or better known as The Jester.”
Delving into the history of the role and how it was used through the ages, Wilson eventually put up the overheads for the students to take notes, rather than having to read the horror story that was his handwriting.
“So as you can see, the Fool is not so much of a fool. These people were in a unique position throughout history to say and comment upon things in ways that would get any other person summarily killed. Even today, we have our equivalents particularly noted in the late night genre where those comedians of note are encouraged to hold up the follies of government and people otherwise in power. People get away with a great deal under the umbrella of humor, sometimes to the point of abusing that umbrella.”
Turning off the overhead, Wilson slid back up onto the desk.
Class Participation:
“What do you think? Do you think it’s a power that’s being abused? That too much is being blanketed beneath the idea of ‘oh, but it’s just being funny’? Do you think there out to be a line or is it important that nothing in the hu…err…mortal condition be above lampooning?”
Homework:
"No homework this week, just try to stay out of trouble and be on time for the bus!"
