Clark was worried.

Lex had taken more than his fair share of head wounds over the years he’d known him, but he usually recovered pretty quickly. The fact that he was still unconscious now was not a good sign. Clark knew he should be looking for Bart but he just couldn’t bring himself to leave Lex like this.

“Lex?” he called softly to his friend, but like all the other times, Lex remained unresponsive. Clark was starting to worry about the possibility of brain damage.

His coat was pillowed beneath Lex’s head and if it wasn’t for the bleeding wound on his temple, Clark would have said Lex looked almost peaceful. He stretched out a hand, wanting so badly to touch him but unable to close the small distance between his fingers and Lex’s face.

He sighed.

As much as he wanted his friendship with Lex to go back to the way it was, he still felt slightly uneasy around him. It was only now, while Lex was open and vulnerable that he realised just how much he still meant to him. Their friendship hadn’t broken down because Lex had lied. Clark was hardly the person to take issue with that. The reason Clark had walked away was the thought that their whole friendship had just been an excuse so that Lex could investigate him more easily. He couldn’t bear it. He’d let Lex get so close. Too close. And he’d paid the price for it. He didn’t think anything could hurt as bad as the pain of thinking Lex had just been using him.

There was still hope, though. Lex seemed genuinely sorry for what he’d done and claimed that Clark’s friendship meant more to him than finding out the truth. He just wished he could believe him. He had to hope it was true though. There was nothing else he could do.

He allowed his fingertips to brush softly over Lex’s face and smiled at how soft his skin was and how right it felt to be touching him again.

He could hear the police sirens now, headed in his direction, and he knew he had to leave. They would make sure Lex was taken to a hospital. He just had to pray he would be ok.

Carefully he lifted Lex’s head and picked up his jacket from the floor. Then, almost as an afterthought, he placed a soft kiss on Lex’s lips.

“I missed you,” he whispered.

Seconds later, when the police burst in, they found Lex lying on the floor. There was no hint that Clark Kent had ever been there.

The End.
