Notes: Stumbled across this Great Big Sea lyric somewhere and this was born. Essentially a five things fic. There's a piece of dialogue in there from 4x04. And it ends with future!fic.

I. When he gripped Dean tight and raised him from perdition.

Hell is a torrent of sound and emotion and colour. Castiel thinks he's never seen so much colour in one place. It lances across his eyes and slices deep into his sight. Everything is up and everything is down and nothing makes sense.

But there is a light. It is small and fading fast. Red at the outside and blue in the deepest centre. Castiel keeps it in sight, fixes it as a fixed point, and forces his way towards it. Smaller demons shrink from his light, others he casts aside with a wave of his hand, and always he moves forwards, or backwards, towards his goal.

He is unprepared for what has become of Dean Winchester. They all knew, of course, but no-one had ever suspected how bad it would be. Castiel thinks he would cry to see it if he had the capability. As it is it hurts him to the very centre to see this.

Dean Winchester fights him, Dean Winchester swears at him, Dean Winchester kicks and punches and slashes and says 'no' over and over again. At first Castiel thinks that Hell has dug itself deeper into Dean Winchester's heart than he had originally thought. But then he reads the words between and understands. Dean Winchester won't leave because there are others to save - his guilt is tying him tight.

At one and the same time Castiel's heart breaks and soars. Hell has not defeated Dean Winchester and he rejoices with it.

Castiel wishes that he could save every soul in here, good and bad, and set them on a path that would lead them to their rightful place in Heaven. But his orders are clear, his orders are to save Dean Winchester and no-one else.

“I am sorry,” he says, even though he knows that Dean Winchester will not remember him. He grips Dean Winchester by the shoulder and pulls with all the strength his Father gave him. Hell does not want to release Dean Winchester and Castiel is forced to grip tighter and tighter until his hand fuses to the human soul.

There is a rush and a swoop of sensation and Castiel leaves Hell with all the force of the greatest storm. They collide with the earth in fashion that flattens the land around it and Castiel is almost knocked loose by the power that is unleashed.

He lays Dean Winchester's soul back into his body and heals him, heals every little hurt the material world has done to him, but nothing can heal the mark on his shoulder, the mark that fits Castiel's incorporeal hand perfectly.

When Dean Winchester fights his way free of the earth Castiel is proud and something else. A deep warmth fills his being that he does not recognise. It is part joy, part worry, part pride, part fear, part light and part dark. It is new and for a moment Castiel is shaken to his very core.

The first time Castiel falls in love with Dean Winchester he doesn't know it.

II. When Dean called him 'Cas' for the first time.

Castiel watches Dean as he confronts his brother. Dean cannot see him and he would not want him to - Dean must do this thing himself. Castiel is surprised by how much it hurts him to see the brothers fight. Even in the short while that he has known them he has been able to see what power and strength they draw from one another. Like he and his own brethren draw on each other.

Dean's body is tight with emotions and his rage and wrath spill out from him and colour the air. Sam by contrast is still, so perfectly still, and he makes himself small despite being the taller of the two and Castiel thinks for a moment that he could admire the half-breed boy.

“Cas said: if I don't stop you - he will,” Dean's words shake with the emotions he is barely holding in check.

Castiel blinks, uncertain if he has heard Dean correctly. He steps back and listens with more care.

“Cas said -”

Another step back.

“Cas -”

Castiel stares as time rolls forward, but now he is not paying attention to what Dean and Sam are saying. No-one has ever shortened Castiel's name before - no-one has ever had a need to. Nicknames a solely the province of humanity and Castiel cannot understand why Dean would apply one to him.

He puzzles at it and worries at it long after the Winchesters are gone. Trails in their wake before he is called to business elsewhere. He finds that he likes that Dean has renamed him, almost as if Dean has made him a part of his world. Castiel wants Dean to trust him and believe him, knows how important it will be for that trust to be strong, and maybe this is a sign.

Castiel ignores the unfamiliar warmth that had spread through him when Dean spoke his name. Just as he ignores the fact that he hears Dean say his name no matter how great the distance is between them. He has not told any of his brothers about the mark he left on Dean - for fear that they will notice the mark Dean has left on him.

The second time that Castiel falls in love with Dean he does not recognise his protective instinct for what it is.

III. When Dean doesn't belittle his doubts

Castiel does not think there has been anything more difficult in his eternity as expressing his doubts to Dean. He knows how dangerous it is, knows where this thinking has led others before, but he cannot help himself in the face of Dean's scorn. He wants Dean to understand that they are not so different.

He expects Dean to scoff and mock, sees that as Dean's default state when interacting with the world, but it does not come. Dean only shares with him a look of stillness and a kind of understanding Castiel thought only his brothers were capable of.

He flees when Dean looks away.

Uriel finds him in the high places of the world, follows him from Everest to Kilimanjaro, from Fuji to Snowdon and eventually stops him in the Rockies.

“Something has disturbed you,” Uriel observes without preamble. He has always been amongst the most blunt of Castiel's comrades.

“It's nothing,” Castiel replies, shakes his human head.

“If it was nothing you wouldn't have led me twice around the world,” Uriel points out.

“It's the Winchesters,” Castiel says reluctantly, knows that Uriel would force it from him otherwise.

“A half-spawn and a non-believer,” Uriel spits and Castiel isn't sure exactly which word has received the most of Uriel's scorn. “If they weren't essential I -”

“Blasphemy doesn't become you,” Castiel says, turning hard eyes on Uriel. Uriel's role amongst the Seven has allowed him a freedom that many angels have not enjoyed and his thirst for his role is not precisely angelic. Uriel has always looked on humans with scorn but his loyalty to their Father is strong enough to prevent him from following in Lucifer's footsteps.

He walks a fine line, though. As does Castiel, it would appear.

“It pains me to say it,” Uriel turns away from his blasphemous thoughts, “but I believe that you have some influence over the elder Winchester. I think you're the only one of us that he will even pretend to obey. And though I'd rather put the fear of God into him - this way may be the best way.”

It is the closest Uriel will ever come to making an apology and Castiel accepts it with a nod of his head. Uriel disappears into the air, called away to reinforce a battle elsewhere, and Castiel is alone again.

Castiel has become used to the warmth that goes with Dean, now, but he can't find it within himself to welcome it. He knows that it heralds something that he can't understand and that grates against him, rough against his thoughts. But Dean seems to share some understanding that Castiel had not expected and Castiel no longer knows if right is wrong or wrong is right.

The third time Castiel falls in love with Dean it changes his perceptions - but he still will not admit it to himself.

IV. When Dean showed he could love an angel.

When Anna stretched up to press a kiss against Dean's lips the warmth inside Castiel exploded like the burning sun. It nearly consumed him in it's fury and Castiel knew jealousy for the first time.

When Anna ascends she brings with her fleeting glimpses of humanity, of emotion and taste and insight, of knowing and feeling and of the smallness of things. For Castiel she reserves the worst, though she does not see it that way, and she brings to him memories of Dean.

Sensation traps him and surrounds him and she gives him all this because she can see what is hidden away within the depths of him. What he has kept secret and safe since he pulled Dean from Hell. Only she could understand it and he feels her sorrow bind him tight before she is called before their Father.

Castiel can name everything now - the warmth of love, not love as he knows it, not the love he feels for his father, but the love that burns and wants and needs. The jealousy that Anna's closeness to Dean provoked in him - and the envy of how far Dean would go to protect her. Relief that Dean would go just as far to protect him, and did so when Alastair would nearly defeat him.

But the love is strongest of all and Castiel crashes to earth under the weight of it. Uriel he has left to fume and rage, he knows that someone will step in if Uriel looks to go too far. Castiel draws thick breaths through his vessel and tries to steady the wild beating of his mortal heart. His vessel responds to the feelings coursing through Castiel as though it had been starved for an eternity.

Castiel finds himself outside the motel the Winchester's have taken rooms in. He sees that Dean is alone, that he has grudgingly allowed Sam to take a room with the demon for a night, and he knows that Dean will turn him away if goes to him.

It does not stop him.

Dean swears at him, Dean rages and shouts and Castiel is convinced that Sam will hear and come to drive him away. He does not. Castiel lets Dean shout until he can shout no more. Dean falls back, exhausted, hands slipping from Castiel's coat where he had gripped so tight and pulled Castiel so close in his fury.

“Anna will be safe,” Castiel says in the silence that follows. “If you believe nothing else I say - believe that.”

“Why should I believe you?” Dean's voice snaps in an angry line. Castiel feels himself flinch.

“Because I can't lie to you, Dean,” Castiel says, hoping that Dean will see it as the truth.

“Why are you here?” Dean asks, turning his head away.

“I -” Castiel looks for the words, wonders what they could possibly be, how does and angel confess that he loves a mortal man? There's so much wrong about this that it might just be right - but Castiel doesn't know where to begin.

His vessel contains memories, of a time when he loved and was loved, and Castiel examines these in an effort to find something, anything, that would allow him to make Dean understand.

“You what?” Dean turns back to Castiel, eyes soft, and Castiel thinks that Dean must be able to see everything in his eyes. He's sure that human eyes couldn't possibly mask what he's thinking.

Dean tilts his head to one side and Castiel almost laughs - it is his own mannerism echoed back at him, after all - but Dean's eyes are suddenly wide with knowledge and. Oh. How did Castiel miss that?

Dean's fingers are tight in Castiel's hair and his lips are hungry on Castiel's and Castiel finds what he needs in his host's memory and slides his tongue between Dean's lips to find Heaven there.

This is what Anna showed him and this was Anna's gift to him and Castiel knows what this is - this is gratitude greater than anything he has ever felt.

“I love you,” Castiel breathes against Dean's lips when Dean releases him to kiss a path down his jaw.

“I know,” Dean whispers against his neck and Castiel is lost.

The fourth time Castiel falls in love with Dean is the time that everything is made sense of. He keeps expecting to Fall - but he doesn't.

V. When the War was won.

Castiel leans wearily on the hilt of his sword, point dug deep into the blooded earth, and wipes the sweat from his vessel's brow. His body is covered by any number of wounds that are slowly healing themselves and he doesn't even notice anymore.

Dean is glorious on the mist shaded morning. They came all through the night but Dean did not falter. He held the line and Castiel held it beside him. The Seven: Michael, Uriel, Gabriel, Raphael, Raguel, Zerachiel and Remiel are radiant in their splendour and they, too, held the line with Dean.

Beside Dean Sam crouches wearily, leaning his weight against Ruby's legs, face marked with the blood of the fallen, but his eyes are clear and his heart is light. Uriel extends a hand and Sam takes it for what it is. Castiel knows that the others of the Seven approve, as each came to accept Sam as the ally he was, and Uriel was the only one who would not believe.

“Hell of a fight,” Dean is suddenly beside him, pressing a warm shoulder against him.

“In more ways than one,” Castiel nods, lips curving. Dean grins at him and it is like the sun and Castiel almost can't breathe for the beauty around them. They have won.

“Hey, hey,” Dean grips his elbow and Castiel realises that his eyes are closed and he is swaying on his feet. “It's over now, Cas, we kicked ass.”

“I'm tried,” Castiel admits, looking into Dean's eyes. “But it'll pass.”

“It better,” Dean says and the look on his face sends a thrill down Castiel's spine. He knows what that look will lead to.

“Little brother,” Michael joins them, claps a hand to Castiel's shoulder. “You showed the sort of courage I haven't seen in your brethren since the first War. You have earned a place of honour for all eternity.”

“Thank you,” Castiel bows his head, overwhelmed. Dean glows with pride beside him and Castiel is certain he will burst if holds his love in check.

“You've earned anything you want,” Michael says, voice lower, intent, informal. “And there'll be no-one who'll deny it. Not now.”

Michael is saying - Castiel looks at the Archangel and sees a smile and knows that Michael isn't saying anything in particular. He is giving permission. Michael leaves them with his smile.

“What was all that about?” Dean raises an eyebrow. “I mean - Michael's cool and all, but half the time I can't make sense of anything he says.”

“It was about this,” Castiel says and he puts his arms around Dean and pulls him close. Dean lifts the other eyebrow then a smile widens across his face as he understands. Castiel knows, now, that he will not Fall for this. That they have earned their place in this together and nothing will rend them asunder. So: Castiel leans into Dean and Dean kisses him with smiling lips. Castiel closes his eyes. And falls.

The fifth time Castiel falls in love with Dean it is for ever. And a day. And nothing can stop him.
