How the hell does he know these things?

“This is unfair,” Villiers says, eyes darting about.

“No, it's unorthodox,” James corrects as he taps a code into the lock.

“If M learns that you, or rather that I -” Villiers begins as the door swings open.

“Are you accusing me of being indiscreet, Villiers?” James asks, piercing Villiers with a hard stare. Villiers flushes under the scrutiny and the corner of James' mouth twitches up, Villiers really was too easy to manipulate at times.

“Of course not, Bond,” Villiers says before adding in an undertone, “At least not in some areas”

James smiles to himself as he pushes the inner door of M's office open. The office is dark and turning the lights on would be inadvisable under the circumstances so James pauses in the doorway to allow his eyes to adjust. Villiers bumps into the back of him, obviously not expecting James to pause, and Bond takes a further step into the room against his wishes. He turns his head to glare at Villiers even as the other man backs away with a muffled apology.

“You don't have to come in,” James says, “Your work here is done”

“Oh, I think not,” Villiers says, moving around James and into the room, “I am not someone that you can use whenever you feel like it, Bond. I'll not be seduced like one of the doctors you blind into giving you a clean bill of health when you're still carrying injuries”

James resists the urge to point out the fact that he's already seduced Villiers and that's why they're here right now because there's something appealing about Villiers like this. He notes it for later and heads over to M's desk. Villiers follows him like a shadow and James has to admit that he's a little glad for the company. And glad that Tanner retired years ago because Villiers was much easier to contemplate than Tanner.

“You know it drives her mad,” Villiers says conversationally as James searches the desk, “How it is that you know the things you know”

“And what do you say when she asks?” James asks, giving up on the draws and flipping M's laptop open.

“I say 'He's Bond, marm, would you expect anything less?'” Villiers says and James can sense the other man's smile, “She doesn't take kindly to it”

“No, I don't imagine she would,” James says, inputting the password for the computer. Villiers intelligence is good and the computer unlocks. James uses the expediency of the search function to find what he's looking for, blocking the screen as Villiers shifts subtly into a position he can see it from.

“She didn't get to the top of the agency by accident,” Villiers says thoughtfully, “She'll figure it out eventually”

“Afraid for your job, Villiers?” James asks as he finds the files he needs and sends them onto himself. Villiers is quiet as James removes all signs of his ever using the computer and James wonders if he's asked the wrong question.

“No,” Villiers says at last, “Yes. Maybe. Honestly, Bond, there's not a person in the service that doesn't fear for their jobs when you're around”

“Is it because no-one can resist my devilish charm?” James asks, relaxing now that his mission is taken care of. He stretches a hand out to Villiers which the other man takes after a moment's hesitation.

“It could be that,” Villiers says, allowing James to slowly pull him closer, “Or it could be the nasty habit you have of blowing things up, figuratively, right in the faces of yourself and those around you”

“Now you're questioning my abilities?” James says teasingly, sliding a hand up Villiers arm.

“Would I ever do a thing like that?” Villiers tone is light and James smiles, running his tongue over his lips, “Particularly not as M always does that for me”

James laughs and pulls Villiers' head down, capturing his lips quickly and easily. Villiers offers no resistance, sliding into James' touch and James allows himself a brief moment of smugness. Villiers breaks the kiss reluctantly, brushing a hand along James' jaw as he does so.

“I think this is neither the time nor the place,” he murmurs, breath ghosting over James' cheek.

“Perhaps you're right,” James nods, stepping away from Villiers, “But I believe I know exactly the right place - if you have the right time”

Villiers smiles, teeth flashing in the partial light of the office, and James feels a slight shiver down his spine. This is definitely a Villiers he can like.

“Why, James,” Villiers says, “I always have the right time for you”

“A fact for which I am very, very grateful,” James says, returning Villiers' smile and backing out of the office.
