Feb 06, 2006 10:10

Phoebe gets to the school early and opens the assistants lounge.

Coffee is brewing and there are doughnuts, too.

Phoebe denies that she is playing Tetris on her phone.

Bel walked into the assistants' lounge before class to grab some caffeine. He froze when he saw Phoebe and turned to leave.

"Cole," Phoebe said without looking up and grabbing her stuff. "It's okay, I was just leaving anyway. I need to talk to Camulus, anyway."

She moved to the door.

"All I wanted was coffee," he said neutrally. "And I can get that in the cafeteria."

"The cafeteria coffee sucks and makes you...sing..." she said faintly. "Our stuff in here is safer."

She shook her head and put her hand on the door. "It's..."

"It's what?" Bel prompted. He was totally unsure of what to say to Phoebe now. She was being polite, but he knew she hated him now, and was scared of him as well.

"It's less likely to make you tell me how you want to kill me," she said sadly as she pulled open the door.

"That wasn't me!" Bel protested. "It was the stupid spell."

Phoebe looked at him. There was fear in her eyes and she shook her head.

"Cole? That spell, it made people sing their true feelings... Kiki and lana and I figured that part out. If you didn't hate me enough to want me dead, you never would have said it." She swallowed. "I know I hurt you, and I knew you hated me. I guess I just didn't expect you to hate me enough to want me dead."

"I see you've got your mind all made up about that," Bel snapped. "Fine, make me the monster. It's what I really am, after all."

Phoebe turned and glared at him. "How would you feel, Cole? How would you feel if someone that you thought cared about you suddenly told you that you would either come back to them or they would light you on fire? Would you be pissed, hurt... scared?"

She shook her head slowly. "You're not a monster, so quit hiding behind that stupid facade. You're a guy, which can seem to be cruel when he's hurt, but you're not a monster."

She swallowed. "The spell Saturday, it was a truth spell. Maybe you didn't realize you wanted me dead that much, I don't know. What I do know? The spell, it made everyone that it affected say things that they... that I... "

He moved quickly and pinned her against the wall, his hands on either side of her shoulders. "I am a monster, Phoebe. You've just never wanted to believe it. I'm a demon, and nothing will change that. And demons embrace the concept of 'if I can't, no one will.' Do you think I want to watch you with Crowley? The thought makes me sick."

Phoebe was caught off guard and when he pinned her, she swallowed, trying not to panic. She wasn't sure how to react as she didn't like this new emotion of being scared of Cole. Anytime someone else had done this to her, all she had to do was call... Cole. This? This was not a good thing.

"There is a difference between a demon and a monster, Cole. You're a demon. Angelus? Angelus was a monster." She forced herself to meet Cole's eyes. "I never did anything with Crowley, Cole. And now, after Saturday morning, I don't think you have any right to judge me." She tried to push against him.

He backed off, giving her space to move. "But you're marrying him," he growled, "and spare me the reasons. I've heard them all before. Don't expect me to stick around and watch you two."

Phoebe put space between them, looking shaken.

She put her hand on the door and looked at him.

"Tell me Cole, what upsets you more? That I had started out trying to help you and keep you from getting killed? Or the fact that it was your enemy who tried to put me back together when I realized..." She pinched her lips shut. Since he hadn't listened to what she had said before about not being healed, she wasn't going to repeat it this time. She swallowed past what she was going to say and then shook her head. "I don't care how much you want me dead, Cole. What I do care about is that if you try it, or if you try to harm anyone I care about, you will wish you didn't know what a witch is!"

She made her escape and once she was down the hall, she collapsed against the wall, dropping her books, and stood there for awhile, trying to get the terror under control.

"I don't want to hurt you!" Bel called after her. He sank down in a chair. "I love you," he whispered.
