“You know what I don’t get?” Alex asked, standing at the nurses’ station next to Jackson.

Jackson glanced over at him. “I’m guessing a lot of things.”

“Ouch,” Alex said, frowning.

Jackson shrugged. “You asked.”

Alex tilted his head. “Why don’t you just ask Kepner out?”

“What?” Jackson asked.

“Who’s the dumb one now?”

“No, seriously,” Jackson said. “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”

“I’m talking about your thing for April.”

“We’re friends.”

“You’re gonna break your million dollar surgeon hands holding that pen because some intern is talking to her,” Alex pointed out. “So uh…yeah. Friends. Very, very friendly.”

“He’s staring at her breasts. It’s disrespectful.”

“They’re nice boobs,” Alex pointed out.

“Hey,” Jackson muttered.

Alex held up his hands. “Very, very friendly,” he repeated.

“Whatever,” Jackson said.

“You know, if you asked her out you’d actually have a reason to get all growly whenever anyone looked at her jugs.”

“Great logic as always, Karev. I’m glad we had this little chat.”

“You’re a chick,” Jackson muttered.

Cristina glanced up from her cup of pudding. “Thanks for noticing.”

“What do chicks see in him?” he asked, pointing across the cafeteria.

She turned to follow his gaze and frowned. “That intern?”

“Yeah,” he said.

“Gross. I don’t know. I might be a chick, but I’m not that kind of chick.” She tilted her head then and started to smirk. “Why do you care anyway?”

“I don’t.”

“So this is just a random topic of conversation you decided to start up?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

“And it has nothing to do with the fact that Kepner made him some pet project.”

“I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”

She started to laugh. “We should play poker, because you are a terrible liar.”

“Shut up.”

“You have a thing for her.”

“I don’t have a thing for anyone,” he said. “I just don’t get the appeal.”

“You know what you should do, if you’re so curious?” she asked. “You should ask April. Since they’re so close and all, she could probably explain it to you.”

“Hey,” Jackson said, plopping down on the couch in the break room next to April.

“Uh hey,” she said slowly. “You’re…cheerful.”

He shrugged. “Good day. Are you having a good day?”

“It’s okay,” she said. “Thanks for asking.”

“Anytime. We’re friends. I care about how your day is going.”

“Okay,” she said, “don’t take this the wrong way but you’re acting really weird.”

“I just feel like we’re kind of drifting apart. We should hang out sometime soon.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?” he repeated.

She nodded. “Sure. You should take me somewhere fancy, Richie Rich.”

“I’d love to. This weekend?”

She wrinkled her nose. “It’d have to be Saturday night, I work Friday.”

“Works for me. It’s a date.”

888888888888

“Ready for our big date?” Jackson asked with a grin when April walked into the kitchen Saturday morning.

“Oh, god,” she said. “I forgot.”

He frowned. “What did you do, make other plans? Are you trying to ditch me?”

“No,” she said. “Of course not. I just ended up helping out in the pit last night and it was crazy and I’m really tired so could I take a raincheck?”

“Uh, sure,” he said. “Sure. No big deal. We can hang out whenever.”

“You’re the best,” she said, smiling tiredly. “I’m gonna go sleep until it’s Sunday.”

“You do that,” he said, watching her disappear up the stairs. “Sweet dreams.”

888888888888

“I know I’m going to regret this someday,” Jackson said, sitting next to Alex at the bar. “Probably today, even, but I need your help.”

Alex grinned. “Can’t resist an invitation like that.”

“April stood me up.”

Alex blinked. “Huh?”

“We were supposed to hang out, go out, I booked a restaurant and everything but, ah, she bailed on me.”

“You asked Kepner on a date and she stood you up. That’s amazing.”

“Glad I could be so entertaining.”

“Relax. And tell me what any of this has to do with me.”

“Maybe you’re right. Maybe I have a thing for her.”

Alex started to laugh. “You want me to help you win her heart or something?”

“Well, I wasn’t gonna put it like that,” Jackson shrugged. “But yeah, I guess.”

888888888888

“Dude,” Cristina said, smiling from ear to ear. “Did you seriously have to ask Karev how to seduce a virgin?”

Jackson groaned and closed his eyes. “No.”

“Really?” she asked. “Because that’s not what he says.”

He shook his head. “I knew that was a mistake.”

“But you were still desperate enough to do it,” she said, slipping into the cafeteria chair next to him. “I’m actually kind of sad for you.”

“Yeah, I can see the devastation all over your face.”

“I like to keep my feelings on the inside.”

“Uh huh.”

“So, did he give you anything useful?”

“No, mostly he just laughed at me.”

“What did you expect?”

“A little help, maybe. You have any advice?”

“What do you think April Kepner and I could possibly have in common?” she asked.

“Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “Like you said, I must be desperate.”

888888888888

“Just ask her out,” Meredith said, reaching around Jackson for one of the files piled up on the nurses’ station.

“What?” he asked.

“April,” she shrugged. “Just ask her out.”

“How do you even know about that?” he sputtered.

“Cristina. And Alex.”

He groaned.

“Whatever,” she said, shaking her head. “I’m just saying…you like her and she likes you and you’re both single and you’re both adults. It’s really not that complicated.”

“You don’t think I missed my window?” he asked.

“Window?” she repeated.

“Like, now I’m firmly locked into the friends zone?”

“How many people did you ask about this?” she asked with a grin.

“A couple,” he shrugged. “Drew the line at asking Robbins because I’m pretty sure she hates me.”

“Okay, stop asking everyone in the hospital about April and go ask April about April. Man up!”

8888888888

“I want to take you on a date,” Jackson announced.

April frowned and looked up at him. “What?” she asked.

He moved into her bedroom. “You and me. On a date. A real one.”

She blinked. “Why?”

“Because I like you.”

“Jackson,” she said, staring to blush.

“April.”

She smiled. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Yeah, I do. Because…you know, that freaking intern stares at your boobs all the time.”

“I don’t think he really does that.”

“He does. And I hate him. Because he stares at your boobs all the time and I like you.”

April laughed softly. “Okay, I guess. Uh…take me on a date.”

8888888888888

“You know you don’t have to do this, right?” April asked.

Jackson stopped at a red light and looked over at her. “I know.”

“Right,” she nodded.

“Lots of guys would love to be on a date with you.”

“You don’t have to say things like that,” she said, shaking her head.

“It’s true.”

“You’re my friend. You’re my best friend, Jackson, and…you’ve always stuck up for me and I don’t know if you’re just being nice.”

“I’m not that nice.”

“You’re nice to me.”

“I like you, April. I like you a lot. And I think we could be good together. Good for each other. I think I could make you happy.”

“And you think I could make you happy?”

He grinned at her. “Yes, I do.”

8888888888888

“This place is beautiful,” April said, glancing around the restaurant.

“You’re beautiful,” Jackson murmured.

She blinked. “Is that a line?”

“What?” he asked.

She shrugged. “You’re good at this, right? You’ve got a lot more experience than I do.”

“It’s not a line, April. And I don’t know that I’m good at it.” He paused. “I went around the hospital asking increasingly ridiculous people for advice about how to do this.”

“Really?” she asked.

“Karev, Yang, some guy in the lab,” he listed off.

“Not the creepy one, right?”

“Well, I hope not.”

She laughed softly. “It’s really that important to you?”

“You’re that important to me.”

88888888888

“I just wanted to say thanks for the advice,” Jackson murmured.

Alex smirked. “Any time. Though I might start charging for my wisdom.”

“I wasn’t talking to you. You give terrible advice, I should charge you for having to listen to your crap.”

Cristina laughed. “He’s talking about me.”

“And what?” Alex asked. “Your deep insight about the feminine mystique?”

“Fancy words for a guy who went to state school.”

“Meredith,” Jackson said firmly. “Thanks for the advice.”

She grinned. “Good date?”

“Good date,” he nodded.

“Guess Kepner’s not a virgin anymore,” Alex laughed.

Meredith shook her head. “He’s gonna kick your ass again.”

88888888888

“So,” April said slowly, sitting on the couch next to Jackson. “Was I worth it?”

He looked over at her. “Worth what?”

“All that work you went to. All the people you asked, all the crap they gave you.”

“I don’t remember telling you they gave me any crap.”

“I assumed,” she said. “And maybe I heard a thing or two.”

He frowned. “Well, don’t worry. You’re worth it.”

“Yeah?” she asked.

He kissed her playfully. “Oh yeah.”
