“You were amazing,” Lexie said after slipping onto the barstool next to Alex. “What you did for those kids, it was amazing.”

He shrugged. “Is breaking that many laws really that impressive to you?”

“No,” she said, wrinkling her nose. “I mean, maybe there was a better way to do what you did, I don’t know, but the thing is, most people, they would have given up. But you didn’t you…you like, used up all your savings and maxed out credit cards and yeah, maybe broke a couple of laws just to get them here. And that’s amazing.”

“If you say so,” he mumbled.

“Oh, come on,” she said. “It must feel pretty good, doing what you did.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I guess it does.”

“We should celebrate. I should buy you a drink.”

“I’d appreciate that, being broke and all.”

She frowned. “We’ll straighten all that out tomorrow. We’ve got time. And money, so it’ll be okay.”

“Here’s hoping.”

“Why aren’t you more excited?” she asked, tilting her head, waving Joe down and ordering them both another round of drinks.

“I guess, now that it all worked out I’m kind of realizing how easily it could have all gone wrong.”

“But it didn’t,” she pointed out. “I mean, you did it. You did this big, amazing thing and you should be proud of yourself. I’m proud of you.”

“Yeah?” he asked, the hint of a smile on his lips.

“Yeah,” she said, practically beaming at him. “I am.”

“You want to share a cab?” Lexie asked when they were standing outside, her gaze turned towards the stars, or where there would have been stars if the lights of the hospital hadn’t shined so much brighter, drowning them all out.

“I actually think I’m gonna stop by the hospital,” Alex said. “Just check on things.”

She bit her lip, turning to look at him. “Can I come with you?”

He shrugged. “If you want.”

“It’s just…I feel like I’m really a part of this, you know? And maybe I shouldn’t, I mean, I don’t want you to think that I’m like trying to take this from you, this is all you, you did this, but I…I feel like I’ve kind of been there for the whole thing and I’d really like to see it through to the end.”

“It’s a free country. You can do whatever you want.”

She sighed. “I’ll just…go home or whatever.”

“Come on, I didn’t mean it like that. It was a joke. Come with me.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“Do what?” he asked.

“Be nice to me.”

“Is that what I’m doing?”

She shrugged. “You tell me.”

“Come with me. You’re right. You’re part of all of this. You should be there.”

She kissed him in the almost deserted hospital hallway outside the peds wing and then immediately pulled back and covered her mouth with her hand.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“I could probably take a stab at it if you want,” Alex murmured.

“What?” she asked.

“What you’re doing,” he answered with a smirk.

She closed her eyes, leaning against the wall. “I just…do you ever miss me? Because I miss you. I miss you…more than I want to admit. And seeing you today, doing all of this with you today, it was amazing. Because it just reminded me of how good we could be together if we just…really had a chance.”

“Lexie.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I don’t know, assaulting you in the middle of the hallway.”

“Let’s not call that assault.”

She bit her lip. “You never answered my question.”

He took a breath. “Yeah, I miss you Lexie. I miss us too.”

“I’m no hero or anything,” he mumbled when they were still standing huddled together in the hallway.

“What?” she asked.

Alex shrugged. “I’m just saying, I’m not…what I did…it doesn’t make me some kind of good guy.”

She tilted her head, looking up at him. “You think I kissed you because you found some way to do what you did for those kids?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re wrong. I mean, it’s not…it’s not about that. Not really. And you’re a good guy. You’re wrong about that too. I may not completely understand you, I don’t know, I may never completely understand you, but I know that under all those walls you put up to, I don’t know, keep yourself safe or whatever, you’re a good guy.” She glanced at her watch. “It’s late. We should get some sleep. Big day tomorrow.”

He watched her disappear down the hallway, stared long after she was gone.

He could have found her.

She was a creature of habit, would go to the same on call rooms she’d always picked.

He let her go.

Finished up checking on all the African kids and found his own room on another floor to sleep for a few hours.

Woke up to find her waiting for him with coffee.

“Big day,” she murmured.

“Yeah, I guess.”

“You’ll be great.”

“I’m not really doing anything.”

“You’re presenting your cases, showing everyone exactly what you did. And I’m going to be in the first row, clapping louder than anyone.”

“Are you sleeping with Alex?” Meredith demanded, sitting down onto the seat in the conference room next to Lexie.

“What?” Lexie asked, her eyes wide.

“Do I really need to repeat the question?” Meredith asked with a smirk.

“No, but maybe you could explain why you’re suddenly asking,” Lexie answered. “And the for the record, no, I’m not.”

“You’re staring at him,” Meredith shrugged.

“I am not,” Lexie protested.

“You’re staring at him like he invented oxygen or something.”

“I’m proud of him and what he did,” Lexie said. “As his friend, I’m proud of him.”

“You are such a friendly girl.”

Lexie glared at her. “Are you calling me a slut?”

“That’s not what I meant. I’m just saying, you and Alex have been running around for weeks whispering around corners and now you’re just…looking at him.”

“I’m not allowed to look at him?”

“Not like that.”

“We’re not sleeping together.”

Meredith shrugged. “Yet.”

88888888888

“My sister thinks we’re sleeping together.”

There was a stack of files on the desk between them because at some point Alex had decided they were a team or something, making sure everything was ready for another day of surgeries.

The whole thing would probably end up costing him Chief Resident but he figured he owed her at least that much.

“She does?” he asked, eyebrows raised.

Lexie nodded. “She does.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. You know her and Cristina,” she said, waving her hands vaguely like she was brushing the whole thing off even though she’d just brought it up, “they’re obsessed with who’s sleeping with who.”

“Uh huh,” he said.

“Anyway, it’s funny, if you think about it.”

“Funny,” he repeated.

“Okay, well, maybe not funny, exactly. Ironic. That she’s convinced I’m sleeping with you when I’m not for once.”

888888888888

He slept with her that night.

He didn’t know if that made the whole thing more humorously ironic or not.

He wasn’t sure what exactly made it funny to begin with.

They fell into bed in an on call room, completely predictable, like they were on some path they couldn’t have escaped no matter what they did.

Not that either of them was really trying at the moment.

“This isn’t just because of the African kids, right?” he asked, looking over at her.

Lexie smiled, tucking the sheet carefully around their bodies. “No.”

“It’s not just because I was a nice guy for once?” he pressed.

She rolled onto her side and kissed him softly. “No. Relax. This was a long time coming, don’t you think?”

8888888888888

“You know I kind of hate you, right?” Meredith asked, slipping into the seat in the gallery next to him and looking down at Lexie in the OR below them.

Alex shrugged. “I have that effect on women.”

She laughed softly. “Not my sister.”

“No,” he said. “I guess not.”

“You get to save a bunch of kids, win Chief Resident and get her back. Well played.”

He shook his head. “Almost like I planned the whole thing, huh?”

“Yeah,” she said with a grin. “Or the luckiest bastard alive.”

“Got shot point blank and survived. Pretty sure it’s the lucky thing.”

“Don’t hurt her.”

“I never mean to hurt anyone.”

“I know.” She looked over at him. “You deserve it, you know. Chief Resident and Lexie, if she’s what you want. You deserve to be happy, Alex. You just have to let yourself be, and I know from experience that that’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.”

“You’re like an advice column or something. Or a fortune cookie.”

She shoved him playfully. “Ass.”

“Hey, Mer?” he asked after a minute.

“Hmm?” she murmured, her attention back on the surgery below.

“Congrats on that whole making the post it legal thing.”

She smiled to herself, sucking on her bottom lip. “Thank you.”

888888888888

“Congratulations,” Lexie said, once it was official, his name typed onto a piece of paper and hung on the wall. “I knew you’d get it.”

Alex looked over at her. “It’ll be you next year.”

She shrugged. “A lot can happen in a year.”

“Yeah,” he agreed. “But don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get some good stuff.”

She shook her head. “Can’t have anyone accusing me of sleeping my way to the top.” She paused. “Let me buy you your first celebratory drink.”

“I should probably be mature and responsible and do paperwork or something.”

She grinned. “Why start now?”

“I guess you do have a point.”

She nodded. “Look, not to be a total girl or whatever, but what happens to us now?”

He shrugged. “Guess that depends on how you feel about sleeping with your boss.”

She stared at him for a moment before kissing him softly. “Probably a bad idea, huh?”

He looked at her. “That mean you’re saying goodbye?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Greys, well, we never met a bad idea we didn’t want to chase.”
