I'm totally overwhelmed by how many people have joined the book club and are psyched about reading. YAY! *bounces a little bit* I'm also completely overjoyed that there are many people here who I don't know. *waves annoyingly to them*
So, after much agony, inner turmoil and pestering of close friends about the best way to choose the first book for the group, I decided to just put all the suggested titles in a hat and pick one. We can come to some kind of consensus later about the best method to pick books, but I really just wanted to get going while there was still some enthusiasm.
What came out of the hat was
Persepolis. I totally pinky swear that I did not influence the outcome. All the little pieces of paper were the same size, I made sure.
If people find that the book is really hard to find, or it really sucks, I'm happy to move on to something else. As a librarian, I encourage using the public library; if your branch doesn't have it, I bet they can get it through inter-library loan. I have no idea how hard this will be for people outside the US. Let me know if it's a major problem.
We need a due date. Hmmm....graphic novel, 160 pages. Let's say...Friday February 1st, 2008. On that date, I'll make a post to get the discussion going. I'd also love to think about a live discussion on Y!M. If you are interested in that, will you send me or comment here with some possible times and days of the week that might be good for you, it doesn't have to be Friday.
I'm sure that in my excitement I'm forgetting something. Let me know if you have questions.
Have fun and happy reading!
