I only have to hold them until they're weaned/had their second shots and can be transferred to the receiving rescue, but yeah. It's going to be an EXCITING few weeks. (And I already have my own puppy - who is all of 4 months old- and dogs). eh, c'est la vie. I'll make the kids help with the puppies. they'll enjoy it and with luck the puppies and kids will wear each other out.
It's going to be TONS of fun, honestly. I wouldn't want to have 7 dogs growing up at once? but for a few weeks? It's just cuteness and fun. With work, but mostly fun.
I am, at this point, the only person IN the rescue who will TOUCH puppies. In part becauase I have a new house not totally crawling in parvo - but mostly because the rest of them are just DONE with that level of needy. I'm trying hard not to join them. I LOVE LOVE LOVE puppies but my default is 'over 10 years old' for dogs AND kids.
That's going to be my eldest someday, with the rescue animals and the fostering. Would be now if my husband wouldn't likely have a nervous breakdown, honestly, so she makes do with working at a large animal rescue. I think we might con him into at least one more rescue dog to keep soon, though, as eldest's rescue outfit is now getting all sorts of dogs and cats in addition to horses, as the local shelter's budget has been axed so they're trying to take as many of the animals as they can so they don't get put down. People suck, sadly. :/
Man, I love it so much but after three years or so on the board of directors? I, um. Went out an adopted a puppy from someone else's rescue. Because I wanted a healthy, happy, puppy that didn't cause angst with the rest of the directors. ...Then it got parvo and I spent a week doing IVs and med injections and forcefeeding. *eyeroll* But I've got MY PUPPY.
Oh lord, poor you and puppy. But yay for happy and healthy now! The kitten we got from our place last year ended up costing me $600 for all the medical problems we had to deal with, and the puppy we got last summer is so very obviously broken psychologically from how she started out, but I wouldn't trade either of them for anything. I can't even imagine dealing with having to try and run those kind of organizations. Eldest just does horse care and training, riding lessons, and helps run their youth program and sometimes the politics drive her almost insane. She's had to take a couple months off lately b/c she was just getting too burned out on it. It's a wonderful, IMPORTANT thing, with a lot of wonderful people doing their best for it, but sometimes it's just too much for her to deal with at 16, especially when I think they tend to forget she is only 16.
Yeah, no, breaks are mandatory for everyone - especially 16 year old kids. I'm 33, and I took from Thanksgiving until this coming week largely off. The only thing I've done in that period, besides deal with parvo puppy here is take in a little old 4 pound chi whose adopter flaked out on and had nowhere to go. He? Is not an issue.
