Halfway to the cook fire, Daniel heard the call behind him, "Hey, Daniel got a minute?"
Daniel recognized Faith's voice and gave a long-suffering sigh. It had been a long day, despite the declared "holiday." The arrival of so many new people had taken up a good portion of his time - meeting the new arrivals and getting a feel of their skills, talents and where they hailed from - and he was tired. Daniel didn't feel up to playing another round of "dodge Faith's advances."
"Faith," Daniel turned to face her. His rebuke died on his lips. The way she moved, the set of her shoulders and the look on her face said that this wasn't Faith up to her usual. She was serious, and maybe even a bit unsure. "Is there a problem?"
Faith shook her head, then frowned and shrugged. "Maybe. I hope not though. Um, I wanted to talk to you, you know, about one of the new people."
"Lindsey," Daniel recalled. "The lawyer."
"Yeah." Faith hooked her hands in the back pocket of her jeans, for once her slouching stance not appearing overly sexual. It made it somewhat easier to not admire the curves that Faith always had so prominently on display. "Him. And me, too."
Daniel nodded agreeable. "All right. Walk with me and we can talk."
"No," Faith shook her head. "I mean, can, you know, we do it away from everyone? It's kinda … I don't want an audience."
She had Daniel's full attention now. He agreed to give her the privacy that she needed and they made their way to the treeline, where they settled onto the grass and sand.
"What's this all about, Faith?" Daniel asked quietly. "This is about more than just Lindsey and whatever bad blood is between you, isn't it?"
Faith tilted her head back to stare up at the sky and the branches overhead. "Yeah. A whole helluva lot more. But I gotta tell you all of it, so that you can really get it."
