Sam's quarry stank. He strode out of the jungle praying that the pair of dead,
overgrown lemmings he carried -- he hadn't a clue what the Corgi-sized rodents were -- hadn't permanently stunk

The hermit crabs were in for the night, their 'cage' secured, which meant that Rodney could finally join the meal. The flame was bright, the conversation lively, and there was fresh... rat?
Rat?
He approached, and surveyed the two groups... John, his partner in crime on one side, Chloe... but she was between George and Dean. No sneaking in there, either. He pressed his lips together in thought and continued on, to the small group that boasted the blonde.
He took a plate, helped himself before greetings were given, and sitting down a small bit away, smiled at Chloe, and nodded to everyone else, finally offering a "Hi." He was still really bad at this. "You know... If every day off is like this, I should have used more of my annual leave." He'd kept himself away, mostly due to Chloe's exhortations, and found something to do in its stead. Of course... it could be considered 'silly', and while the other group was talking athletics, he was...
"I caught some hermit crabs for racing. I-I-I think we could get a halfway decent starting gate built with a few parts of the wraith dematerializer, and perhaps grab some wiring off it's wreckage." Before Daniel complained, however, and someone else brought up the problem with it, he waved his hand, "Of course we can put it back together. But... figure, we use the solar power system I've got powering the laptop," Design courtesy of the Doctor(9), though the pair brought it to fruition, "Relays aren't hard to build. Just motion-sensitive photoarrays to trigger it might be a little difficult..."
Glancing at Chloe again (not sweet on her, is he?), he smiled, the expression lopsided. "You've got 'Sam'. I'll introduce you to him tomorrow?"

Soon after George and Chloe joined the group Dean went into playful flirt mode. Sam knew him well enough to tell that Dean's occasional touches of Chloe's back, arm, and leg weren't serious... necessarily. Dean thought himself a playboy, but a respectful one.
Then McKay, who oh so obviously was smitten with Chloe, joined the group. Watching and listening to him was almost painful. Sam stopped Dean from mocking the awkward scientist by elbowing his side.
"You've got 'Sam'. I'll introduce you to him tomorrow?"
"You hear that, Sammy?" Dean chuckled. "Rocket scientist here named a crab after you."

Rodney was definitely "overthinking the plumbing" in the immortal words of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. Building a starting gate out of Wraith dart parts and other electronics? Chloe wondered if that was just typical engineer-type enthusiasm for complex gadgets or if the whole hermit crab racing scheme was some kind of courtship scheme.
Rodney clearly had a crush on her. It was hardly a secret. Someone had put their names in the pool that ass Sawyer had started! Chloe shot Dean a brief glare for his muttered wisecracks--and saw his brother Sam elbow him none too subtly in the ribs. She gave Sam a hint of a smile in thanks and returned her attention to Rodney.
"Sounds like a plan," Chloe said to Rodney.

He grinned at the approval, and nodded, letting the 'crab line' go. Nothing really came up in it's stead, however, and the beaming smile began to slip in the desperate attempt to think of something else. Add to that the awkwardness of having to lean to talk? One on one, he was fine. Around here, around the fire pit? There was reason why he usually got his food and stepped away, eating dinner with the Doctor some days, alone others.
That'd probably be best... dinner. Eat, Rodney... What he'd like to do is invite the blonde out to water's edge later... but in the crowd? Nope... particularly after hearing the whispers of... mrf. No. Alone, it'd be a whole lot easier.
