There are different X-Verses, right? Astonishing is written by Joss Whedon of Buffy and Firefly fame, and I have the two graphic novels and two loose issues that just came out. It's it own 'verse so all you have to do is read those.
It's not that complicated. I started reading Astonishing. You could also read Ultimate, which is made for new fans (I have all of them).
It won't take you long at all, promise.
