Semi-open thread: An anonymous Valentine

There is a box on Mello's doorstep. A small, gold, rectangular box with a black ribbon tied diagonally across the top. By the look of the decorations around the cardboard, and by the date on the callendar, one could guess that this box was filled with fancy assorted chocolates. A note is slipped under the ribbon, and it seems to be hastily scrawled ( Read more... )

Mello'd been planning to stop at the store before classes to see if any of the holiday chocolates were on clearance yet, only to stop dead in his tracks at the small box sitting on the floor.

For Mello

.....

Picking it up and pulling the ribbon, careful to use only the tips of his fingers (in case the box is a hazard and will require printing later), Mello opened the gift, his eyes widening at what lay inside.

Chocolates...

Near wouldn't get him chocolates. Near thought the entire day was stupid. And Matt wouldn't bother with such decoration; he gave him random chocolates all the time.

But then, who...?

Smiling and shrugging, deciding it didn't matter, Mello went back inside, hastily scrawling a note and leaving it outside the door before taking his box back in with him, fully intent on discovering just how much better fancy chocolates were than regular ones.

Thanks. Happy Valentine's Day.

After school, Midna couldn't resist the urge to visit Mello's home again. Just to make sure he saw her present. Half of her didn't really expect him to appreciate it...just a silly little box of chocolates. Though he did like chocolate...

She peered around the corner at his doorstep, making sure he wasn't there. The box was no longer there, but there was a slip of paper where it once was. Did he leave her note there?

Cautiously, she glided silently to it and picked it up, looking it over as she held it in both tiny hands. Thanks. Happy Valentine's Day

For some inexplicable reason, that made her heart start up again. She leaned against the wall, hugging the note to her chest, as if absorbing the words into herself.

But a noise snapped her back into reality and she slipped into the shadows in case that was Mello coming out.

Eating a chocolate, (these fancy ones really WERE a lot better than the normal kind!) Mello had heard a sound by his door, and he reacted quickly, wanting to see if it was his mysterious admirer come back.

He opened his door, chocolate still in mouth, to see the note gone, but no one in sight. He frowned a moment, before leaving the door open and going back inside.

Coming back out, Mello set a homemade chocolate on a little plate outside the door, leaving another note beside it and closing the door. Moving back to the kitchen to finish making dinner, he figured that whoever had left the note might come back at some point and find it there. It was worth a shot, at any rate.

Humming to himself, starting up the stove, Mello smiled to himself. Valentine's day was fun.

I made this for you. It took a while. Sorry for not getting anything for you before. I would have if I knew who you are. ~Mello

Midna's heart raced as she watched Mello. At least she could see that he liked the chocolates. She felt heat rising in her face as he left the chocolate out, how glad she was to be in hiding.

She waited a few minutes after he went back inside, just to be safe, then floated back to the door, skimming the note he left with the chocolate.

I would have if I knew who you are....she smiled a little sadly as she read that.

Would he go out of his way like this if he knew it was me...?

Her emotions were all over the place...love? Embarassment? Shyness? None could be told from any other. She looked up at the door, faintly hearing Mello humming behind it. She gave herself a bit of altitude, raising a fist as though to knock.

She stayed that way for a few seconds, then stopped, lowering her hand.

No. It's better this way.

She sunk back down to the ground, and with a twirl and a wave of her hair, she and the chocolate on the doorstep disappeared.
