I finished reading Evgeniia Ginzburg's memoir, Journey into the Whirlwind, about her arrest during Stalin's Great Purge, and subsequent journey through prison, solitary confinement, and hard labor camps. It's very painful, but also amazing and astonishing, as it bears witness to the limits humans can reach in every dimension: brutality, ignorance, fear, friendship, honesty, survival.
