He stares at her with the same cold, calculating look that he gives to everyone, the same generic indifference that he’s worn since he left Konoha, perhaps even before that. But despite how long ago that was, he still remembers. The Hyuuga…a noble, strong clan, the epitome of shinobi should be.
Itachi is rarely impressed.
And she is no exception.
Before him and his partner, she is weak and trembling. In the corner, the boy and his dog lay barely breathing, and he sees her eyes flit over to them every so often, as if she could not see their presence otherwise. Inwardly, he wants to spit in annoyance that she chooses not to use the gifts bestowed upon her by her family lineage to her advantage. But she must be concerned. They are not dead yet, nearly so in their attempt to save her.
That’s what best friends are for.
Itachi wouldn’t know, he killed his.
But they have information that he wants. They cannot kill them just yet. Itachi issues a soft-spoken order to his partner. ‘Get them out of here.’
Kisame wordlessly complies, and then it is just Uchiha Itachi and Hyuuga Hinata alone in the cavern. She lets out a small whimper at the removal of her friend-friends?-but when Itachi fixes his gaze back on her, momentarily distracted by his partner’s exit, she stops, swallows, and visibly tries to stay her trembling.
Weak as she is, Itachi is either amused or surprised-he doesn’t know, really-that she’s trying to show him some hint of bravery. She knows and he knows that she’s no match for him, not alone, and still coming off the tranquilizers. But then, that just makes his life a whole lot easier. When he doesn’t have to expend himself to get a small tidbit of information…that’s the sort of thing that makes his day.
As he kneels down next to her, she raises her arms defensively, expecting an attack of some sort, but that is not what he has come to do. True, he has a kunai at the ready for when he’s done with her, but for now, she is safe.
He extends his arms, pulling her into something resembling an embrace, but with a distinct lack of any affection or caring. He hears her audible gasp, and surely it must be a surprise to have a mass murdered hugging you, yet there is no kunai in your back, and you’re not bleeding from anywhere. It’s just a simple, every day gesture that you might have given to your friends.
“Tell me everything you know about the kyuubi, Naruto,” he whispers into her ear, feigning some sort of sultry lilt that seems to charm all the women he meets, regardless of his distinct disinterest in them.
“N-never. I won’t tell you a thing.”
She stutters, but it’s a bold statement. She is defiant, even in her fear. Anyone but Itachi might have smirked, or laughed, or shown their amusement, but his expression remains blank. He can still feel her trembling, after all.
For her part, Hinata is more scared on the outside than she is on the inside. What she lacks in physical strength, she makes up in a surprising mental strength. No one would ever guess that she shy, easily-intimidated little Hinata could have so much will power. While her body shakes from the rush of adrenaline and every move the Akatsuki member makes causes her to flinch, she is resolute.
She knows what he wants Naruto for, and she will not let him anywhere near him.
And it’s not just because it’s Naruto in question. If it were Kiba, or Shino, or Shikamaru, or Neji, or anyone from Konoha, she would not cave in. Fiercely loyal, they can do whatever they like to her, but she will not give them the information. Even as his lips descend upon her neck and he whispers falsely sweet things into her ear, she won’t cave in.
It’s a blatant act.
He is only trying to seduce her because he believes it’s the easiest way to get information from her, better than threatening her or torturing her, but what he hasn’t banked on-she knows this-is that she would never sell out a friend. She was very young when the massacre of the Uchiha clan occurred, but she remembered every detail, storing it away for future use.
She knows he killed his best friend, and his entire family, and she knows that he doesn’t understand the bond of friendship and allegiance that she feels to her friends and her home. He could never understand and so he grossly underestimates her.
And when he sees that his charms aren’t working on her, he brings the kunai to her throat, but even that is not enough to scare her. She doesn’t fear death, if it means she will be saving the lives of others. She’s willing to sacrifice anything, even her own self.
“Run.”
It’s a single word, a command really, but he withdraws his kunai and himself, stepping back to seemingly give her space. She is confused, and takes it as him simply wanting the chase. But she has to try. She’s been given the opportunity the escape, to warn everyone, and even if it means she might give him the pleasure of capturing her again, she has to try. She’ll try for Kiba, for Shino, for Neji, for Hanabi, for her father-for everyone in Konoha.
So she only hesitates a second before she bolts, running as fast as her feeble legs will allow her, the images of those dear to her flashing through her mind and giving her the strength she needs. She reaches out her senses-her genetic inheritance-but she surprisingly doesn’t sense him. For a moment, it is only the other one giving chase, and with a sickening lurch, she realizes she’s left Kiba behind.
But she can hear his voice urging her to go on without him, because she will do more good by bringing what she’s learned home. Her legs keep propelling her forward, and soon, the presence of both Akatsuki members are gone from her range.
He watched after her, emerging from the cavern, with Kisame giving him an odd look, but not questioning Itachi’s decision. This is his gift to her. He hopes that she will use it well, strengthen herself, and some day be something more akin to a worthy opponent. To kill her now would have been far to easy, and now she will tell everyone where they have been, but by the time anyone gives chase, the pair will already be long gone.
