So yeah, New Orleans was lots of fun. Chris & I drove down Friday afternoon, with just enough time to meet our gracious host, Andy, at Nowe Miasto (the warehouse/commune wherein he resides) and make it to the show. The bands: Bad Roads, Souls of the Slain, Sky Saxton & the Seeds, ? and the Mysterians, and Dr. Spec’s Optical Illusion. It was great seeing these old rockers relive a time when they were wild & subversive & lusted after, a time before I was alive (or as Trey would say, “when I was dead”).
We spent the next day w/John, Selena, and JJ, listening to JJ’s hilarious interview from the night before with “?” himself. We also ate at Juan’s, shopped for records, went to the Iron Rail, walked insane distances, drank in the street, saw a break-dancing hand grenade & male strippers, did not bathe nasty girls, visited the Circle Bar, The Dragon’s Den, & Mimi’s, and spent most of the night wondering what horrible fate became of JJ, after he disappeared with some bum. A wake-up call the next morning revealed it was, in fact, incarceration. Sunday consisted of leaving JJ in jail, Café Dumonde, more record shopping & heading home. On a whim, we thought it might be fun to tour Baton Rouge libraries. Chris also introduced me to the best-ever Indian food at “India’s”.
During the drive down & back, we played Mad Libs. The following is a list of additional words & phrases so crucial in summing up the weekend that they had to be included:
Future people, 96 tears, Wrong-Way Andy’s biscuits, attorney, beignets, crotchety old record store owner, warm hand towels, gray water, JOHN!, beer, whiskey, gutter sludge, Go-go dancer #2, taxi, directionless, gummy worms, dirty.
