It occurred to me when I moved to a new country where I’m relatively isolated, in a strange and distant land that it how well I fared might well depend on the willingness of relative strangers to extend an open hand once in a while. This seams to have become very much the case after last weekend. A phone call awakened me on Friday night as I dozed in front of my TV with Deadwood blazing away. A simple invitation from my buddy from downstairs, inviting me to go and see a ‘Rock-a-billy’ band, though I had never heard of one of these bands I quickly pulled myself together and headed out. After the band that were to turn out to be far more like blues than anything else, it was decided to head back to home after stopping for chines. This lead to all kinds of difficulty, as while the beer had made me sleepy it had made my companion activate his ‘be stubborn and get lost in your own town’ mode. The chines was closed, conversations such as - ‘this is B street we live down here!’ came out as the my buddy pointed at D street. The only way to put an end to all this was to eat a hot dog.
All of this lead to the ever busy Saturday at work, which was pretty dam tiering, but ended with a pleasant message from a hiveling inviting me out to have a few drinks in the town, and I finally managed to find bars that I liked and had good looking women in it! Score! Sunday I indulged the self love feast that was the Oscars, I’m a huge movie fan so their was an interest in this for me as well as a novelty of watching it all live. Though I have to say giving a humanitarian award to a guy for restoring film in my mind goes a little far. But again I was able to catch most of the show due to some kind offers of lending me the TV set for a few hours, I also managed to borrow some DVD’s! Score!
But for me the most random act was while returning from boarders book store right on the edge of town, while walking along the road (note their really isn’t much in the way of pavement on this road just a white line separating you from the traffic, I had never realized how much I loved that 2-3 inches of elevation). A pick up screeched up beside me and some one shouted ‘hey can I give you a lift’ It was two customer that I had given some help to a few weeks back and had somehow remembered me. Very strange no?
