PairPuri Vol 1 Atobe x Sanada
Cross Talk Suwabe Junichi x Kusunoki Taiten [pg.31-33]

Suwabe Junichi (Atobe Keigo) X Kusunoki Taiten (Sanada Genichirou)

Revealing hidden anecdotes!? An unlikely discussion between the two!

Suwabe-san's impressions of Sanada and Kusunoki-san's impressions of Atobe.

Kusunoki: The first time I was involved with Atobe was during the Atobe and Tezuka match. For that scene, Suwabe-kun had to correct his recording. Seeing that, I got the feeling that he's a very passionate person.

Suwabe: I was able to do the monologue during the match in one take, but I couldn't accept it. The Tezuka match was Atobe's greatest big scene. I asked them for a retake.

Kusunoki: You sure had a large number of lines!

Suwabe: I was allowed to fuss over those solo parts that shouldn't have caused the others around me trouble.

Kusunoki: You know, that match made me feel that Atobe is very cool.

Suwabe: Sanada is a very stoic person. Hearing a slightly mismatched phrase like "tarundoru" from such a character is amusing. I feel that part connects with Taiten-san. (laughs)

Kusunoki: It's just the opposite! I'm not stoic at all...

Suwabe: But, Taiten-san, although you give people a fierce impression when they first look at you, don't you have a playful and cute side? Last year at the Jump Festa, you forgot your mic and went on stage like that. (laughs)

Kusunoki: You know, that wasn't on purpose!

Suwabe: That's why it was cute! I got the feeling that you connect with Sanada there.

Recalling the Auditions. Now we can talk about them.

Kusunoki: Actually, before Sanada, I also tried out for Tezuka's part. He's a middle schooler, but my voice is too deep for one. I was conscious of presenting a fresh image. But after hearing Okiayu's Tezuka voice, I thought, "Ah, it would have been okay to stick with a deep voice!"

Suwabe: So you felt there wasn't a need for forcing yourself to sound young?

Kusunoki: That's right. (laughs) And then, right after, (Ryoma's seiyuu) Minagawa-san told me, "Konomi-sensei said that there's another role that fits Taiten-san perfectly."

Suwabe: Was that role Sanada?

Kusunoki: Regarding Sanada, I thought from the start, "Ah, I really like this character!" What about Atobe?

Suwabe: When I looked at a drawing of him, I thought, "He has a beauty mark in the same place I do!" so I felt very close with him.

Kusunoki: Ah~! You're right.

Suwabe: On the surface, Atobe and I are completely different, but I can empathize with him on the inside. He's a character who uses unique phrases, but strangely, I was able to get into character easily. Taiten-san, what about you? Were you able to get into character in the beginning?

Kusunoki: I remember I was very worried over how to say Sanada's line, "That's an unacceptable shot!"*

*たまらんスマッシュだな: tamaranai can mean intolerable or tremendous. Extraordinary. Out of this world.

Suwabe: That is definitely not a middle schooler's vocabulary. (laughs)

Kusunoki: But when I watched Suwabe-kun and Okiayu-kun's match, I was able to understand that line. I thought, "Ah, this part is truly 'tamaran'."

Suwabe: So that's what you thought.

Kusunoki: Also, I kind of like a samurai-ish phrase like "tarundoru." I also like historical shows and the like. Isn't Atobe's "Ore no bigi no yoina" also difficult? Normally, no one says that. (laughs)

Suwabe: I practiced at home. But it's interesting to have lines that you normally wouldn't say in daily life.

Kusunoki: When I first saw Sanada's "KIEEEE" in the script, I thought, "No way~, I can't do this." I mean, it's tennis, why "KIEEEE"? Now that it has sunk in, wherever I go, I get requests to say it. (laughs)

Things that struck you from the characters' profiles!?

Suwabe: Sanada's attractiveness is how he's "THE Japanese man".His seriousness and manliness are things today's Japanese men lack.

Kusunoki: I agree! Well, Atobe is Atobe. In the end, he's not a cooperative and family-oriented* guy.

*草食系(soushoku kei): can refer to being an herbivore or a person who is not competitive but rather kind, cooperative, and family-oriented

Suwabe: Because his favorite food is roast beef. (laughs)

Kusunoki: Ah, Sanada also likes meat. (laughs) Aside from that, Atobe rarely seems to train seriously, yet he's strong.

Suwabe: No, no. There's a cool scene where he's training with the machine!

Kusunoki: But when you think of Atobe, don't you think of "play"? His thinking is very flexible.

Suwabe: To me, Atobe is not a prodigy, rather, I imagine him to be a prodigy of hard work. Somehow, I feel he's similar to Sanada.

Kusunoki: Mm, that's true.

Suwabe: Sanada's interests include muscle training after all. Ah, he's bad at following the fads.(laughs)

Kusunoki: You're right. (laughs) But it's not that he's bad at it, but rather that he doesn't care about it, for sure!

A message for the future of Tenipuri from the two

Suwabe: With new combinations with old characters, even more chemical changes with new characters, "Shin Tenisu no Oujisama" is going to get even more heated from now on!

Kusunoki: Maybe Atobe and Sanada will have a part together too.

Suwabe: Yeah, like how they paired up for doubles in the anime.

Suwabe and Kusunoki: "Hametsu he no tango!" (laughs)

Kusunoki: I look forward to various collaborations in the future.

Suwabe: Yeah. The seiyuu camp is hoping for an animated version. Please continue supporting us!
