news-y things and holiday snaps

1. Today, I reached the halfway word count mark on the first draft of my thesis. I would feel pleased with myself, if it weren't for the fact that I'm finding it pretty much impossible to feel pleased with anything I do on this thesis at the moment. I am entirely burnt out on it, to the point where I know I'm consistently producing work way below ( Read more... )

Hello! I don't expect you to remember me, but I last showed my face around here when reviewing one of your Phoenix Wright stories a long time ago (and have been catching up on your fanfic + reading your journal since then, which I hope you will find flattering and not creepy). I hope you don't mind me jumping in on the subject of fic recs! I know you mentioned a while back liking Sue Sylvester on Glee, so I wonder, have you read the story Giving Back? It's a pretty short fic and YMMV, but I found it very funny and silly. In terms of stories that don't feature Sue (though she does have a few more), I also like the author's 'Most'-verse and this story a lot.

(Speaking of which, I've been curious since you made an earlier post asking for Glee fic recommendations -- which stories in the fandom have you enjoyed? Do you mind sharing?)

As far as the PWKM goes, I wonder if the WIP you're following is the WIP I'm following. Either way, I don't think I can be of much help with fic recs in that fandom, since I can only guess you've followed that kink meme for longer and in more detail than I have (I just started to get back into it a few months ago). Good luck finding good new stories, though!

Hello again! You are always welcome round these parts, and ESPECIALLY for bringing me good Glee fic, OMG. I absolutely loved those Sue fics (I can't get over how good her Sue voice is! I think she almost does it more consistently than the show's writers); they were just what I wanted - more Sue Sylvester to fill the gap between series :D I am now working my way through all her Glee fic and loving that, too; I seriously can't thank you enough for the pointer ♥ I wish I could return the favour, but tbh, while I've read stuff in the fandom that I've enjoyed, nothing's really stood out for me enough for me to want to rec it. I feel like I'm missing out on loads in that fandom, though; because it's so high-traffic, and I've not yet developed the knack for picking out the awesome femslash from the decidedly "meh", I tend not to click through very much.

For reference, the WIP I'm following is the big Kristoph-centric prison therapist fic - I seriously love the OC narrator, and I think the whole set-up is such an effective way of exploring the series criminals. I'm also like a moth to a flame when it comes to long, plotty gen in this fandom - less and less 'ship fic in this fandom's interesting me, and good long gen fic is so rare!

Grinning from ear to ear, here. I'm so happy you liked the stories, and that you hadn't already read them! I'm with you in being amazed by miggy's Sue voice -- the resemblance is uncanny -- and just, in general, the quantity and quality of her output. When I found her journal (only a few weeks ago, probably one of the last people to catch on to its existence), I spent a few happy days reading everything she'd ever written. And she's still writing!

Yeah, I feel like I'm only beginning to discover what there is to find in Glee fandom. My own less than scientific method of searching for fics tends to consist of a) looking through the journals of authors I know I like, to see which authors they like or are friends with, and then reading those authors' stories, and b) adding fics on delicious (my tiny account is here), seeing who else has bookmarked them, and seeing what else those people have bookmarked. It can be kind of tedious and roundabout, but sometimes you find some nice surprises.

That is the WIP I'm following! Isn't it amazing? I'm seriously in awe of how long and elaborate it is, not to mention how layered and twisty the author has managed to make her characterization of Kristoph. It really feels like you're sitting right alongside the therapist, getting trapped in Kristoph's mind games, always wondering if you're playing him or he's playing you. I'd really like to know if the author has written anything else for the meme -- I've found a few WIPs that look like him/her based on a few common grammatical and formatting quirks, but it kills me to think I might have missed something brilliant that he/she had already finished writing before I started reading the meme again. I guess this is part of the point of an anonymous kink meme, the guessing and the searching, but there's this obsessive perfectionist part of me that wants total transparency and absolute certainty instead. :P
