resurfacing, sort of

I am alive, I've just been going through a difficult and busy patch with my thesis lately. Pretty much everything I do has this undercurrent of "how on earth am I going to finish this degree and what the hell am I going to be able to do with it once I have?" My brain is constantly occupied with thoughts of cv building and publication and ( Read more... )

Huh, for some reason I thought you'd watched and posted about Kuroshitsuji; I wonder why I had that idea in my head? Very strange.

Anyway, as for the gay...hrm. It is and it isn't. Pretty much EVERYONE, regardless of gender, is shown to have a crush on Sebastian. There's a character, Grell, who is presented I think as an effeminate man (I say I think because the subs weren't great, and it was hard to tell if Grell was actually supposed to be genderqueer in some way or just super-camp - he basically came across to me like Jean Armstrong, idk), who unambigiously tries it on with Sebastian in pretty much every scene they have together, but that's basically treated as a big joke. I think Sebastian and Ciel's relationship would probably code as mega slashy if Ciel was older, and there are a handful of points where the creators probably are deliberately playing with Sebastian/Ciel fanservice, but the fact that Ciel is 12 just shuts down my slash goggles. There's some supremely kinky, very mindfuck-y rival!slash possibilities for Sebastian towards the end, though (can't really talk more about it without being spoilery), which I would be ALL OVER if it was anywhere to be found amidst the mass of Sebastian/Ciel :/

Tl;dr: it is as gay as it seems, but a lot of it's played for laughs and kind of creepy fanservice, and I didn't find a huge amount of actual slash fic potential in it. I did really enjoy it, though, much more than I thought I would (I was judging it by the fandom, though, which is never really fair).

I'm pretty sure I mentioned watching the tail end of an episode and thinking it was pretty gay, but the actual show I watched at the time was Pandora Hearts. I've heard about the controversy about Grell, and also that the manga is better, and I'm... vaguely considering reading it at some point. Thematically it seems like I might enjoy it. The fandom scares the crap out of me, naturally.

Thank you for your input!
