I need to fail less at getting back to comments fanbeatsman March 31 2010, 12:02:36 UTC
You know, I've actually just been replaying T&T recently, and you're absolutely right (although, I have to say, it is distressing just how many times I have found myself making exactly the same mistakes as I did the first time round; apparently, I just never learn). Phoenix can seem really quite impressive in court if you play the game fluently. I think I've very rarely managed to hit stretches like that, though, partly because as I said to alienchrist, I SUCK at detective work, and partly because I always want to drag as much dialogue out of the characters as possible, so I press and examine EVERYTHING.

But I didn't think this clashed with anything we've seen before for one big reason -- the whole thing about MVK and running perfect trials, and the fact that Edgeworth was trained like that. He's scrambling on his feet in AA:I, and we're not intended, I don't think, to assume this is usual for him.

I really like this reading. I hadn't given much thought to the fact that Edgeworth is not in his natural habitat in this game, and might very plausibly be floundering. If anything, I almost like it more than the idea that he should have adapted better; I like the implications of an Edgeworth whose past success is partly a function of heavy, heavy training, and it sits well not only with his behaviour in this game, but with the effect that Phoenix has on him. I also like the spin it puts on the fact that Edgeworth very rarely acknowledges in-game where his logic is tenuous or his argument is circumstantial; it aligns him a little bit more with Franziska, i.e. the way she always presents her argument as flawless whether she believes it or not, and thus both of them more strongly with von Karma.

Kristoph I like in-game, but I find him pretty uninteresting in fic - I just don't see where you can take his character, beyond what the game gives you. Calisto, I expect, I would be the other way around with, although I've not really seen much Calisto-fic that's caught my eye.
