The letter I just sent to WomanLog, a crappy iPad app for fertility tracking:

Hello, ladies! I wrote this a while ago, but realized today that just posted to my livejournal it doesn't do much good and that the FAM community is definitely who would appreciate it more! Also, maybe you have advice on an app that would work better. For now, paper charts are doing the trick though. Enjoy!

Dear WomanLog app developers,

I purchased the "pro" version of WomanLog for my iPad today. I expected that inputting cervical mucus information would impact where you label ovulation and make the app useful forme, but it appears that estimated fertility days are based only on the information I input for my luteal phase. I assumed this was a part of what I was paying for when I downloaded the app. I can estimate fertile days on my own, more accurately, with paper charts that are easier to navigate and make data recording easier.

I am really confused about the Celsius/Fahrenheit display. I can enter my BMT in Fahrenheit, but no matter what, when I close the app and come back it shows up in Celsius on my calendar. If I enter new BMT, the data just entered is displayed in F, which further confuses things because then both systems are displayed simultaneously in the calendar view.

I also find your display of the BMT graph unhelpful and confusing to navigate, since it excludes all  information except menstruation days and BMT. I would really love to use your ipad app to chart my cycle, and maybe even enter all my back data (50+ cycles!) into the system so I don't have to worry about losing the papers, but it is too frustrating and won't work for me.

Furthermore, I find it insulting and misleading that you identify and label ovulation and fertility dates in an app that collects cervical mucus data and temperature data, yet this helpful information is ignored  ovulation and fertile days are based solely on the length of luteal phase entered manually. Even if I wanted to enter my ovulation date retrospectively, after the cycle were over, there is no option to have a different LP each month. I know this is uncommon, but a luteal phase can change over time.

On your website, I see only information on transferring data from the free app to the pro app and buying "skins." You must understand that this is a strong statement that you care only about appearance and collecting two dollars here and there from women who could do a better job of tracking their cycles with a free paper calender printed from http://gardenoffertility.com , or drawn on graph paper by hand. Please re-consider the functionality of your app, and consider removing it from the market, or at least removing the paid version, until you acknowledge these issues.
