Cycle confusion...

Apr 26, 2008 18:59

I have been keeping track of my past 6 cycles.  This month my cycle started on April 1. I had a temp spike on the 17th and unprotected sex on the 15, 17 and 19th ( Read more... )

I'm confused... you were expecting a 17 day luteal phase? Fair enough if that's your usual length, but it's pretty long for most people. If it's not, what is your usual luteal phase length? That would be more helpful in determining what is going on for you...

It seems unlikely that your period would come at 9 dpo unless you have really short luteal phases, which would make me think option 2 or 3 is more likely. I couldn't guess as to which is more likely, though.

I wasn't expecting a 17 day luteal phase..that's just when my temp spiked. I don't know my usual length at all because I've only been temping for the past month. That's also a reason why I'm confused because I thought that the temp spike indicated ovulation.

My cycles aren't very regular, so even though this is day 26 for me, it's still quite a bit earlier than I've gotten my period in the past (if that's what this is.)

Is it normal for implantation to cause heavier bleeding?

A temp spike does not mean ovulation. You can determine ovulation from a sustained temperature in corroboration with the other primary fertility sign, change in cervical mucous.

Are you charting online? Could you link to your chart?

Even if you did ovulate on the 17th, which I am not certain of with the information you have given, 10 DPO is often far too early for a pregnancy test to be accurate. I think it would be impossible to tell if the spotting you are seeing is an early period, ovulation spotting, implantation spotting, or annovulatory bleeding without seeing a chart with temperature and cervical mucous plotted.

Unfortunately I haven't been regular with my temps and I do not have an online chart. At this point, my bleeding is bright red and slippery with clots and I do have mild cramping. Would you say there is anything I could rule out at this point?

It sounds like you simply ovulated, and thus got your period, early. See helixaspersa's comment below.

It sounds like your period is starting, I thin k this is the most likely explanation. Even if you had conceived, a failed pregnancy at this very very early stage would be simply a failure to implant, not a bleed like this, followed by your period at the ordinary time. You mention that your cycles do vary in length, though not usually this short. The thing to remember is that your luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your period starting) will be fairly consant (within a few days) whereas the actual day on which you ovulate can vary quite widely (for me, for instance, between days 12 and 23 in recent months). It's not quite clear to me from your description of a 'temperature spike' whether by this you mean a sustained shift upwards for three days or more, or that you haven't been temping regularly and that you just happened to do so and notice a higher temperature on day 17. If the latter, then you can't assume that was your post-ovulation shift, you don't have enough information. Given that your period has started today on day ( ... )

Thank you for your reply. It's been very helpful and I think that I need to brush up on my knowledge and re-read TCOYF.
