i'm gonna fuckin' rise like a pheonix

cold_campbells, I haven't talked to you in a hundred years, and still I think you're as awesome as ever. Thank you for being like that, dorky and crazy and smart and hilarious and warm and always fun. Because if you weren't like that, how much I love you wouldn't make sense and I wouldn't be able to justify it to other people. Happy birthday!!

So here's a little bit of lame, crazy fluff. Keep in mind that I've been writing tests all week, so I'm still trying to wring out my essay-writing style from my fic-writing style (and being completely unsuccessful at it). Also, I think all of these people are stupid for taking this long, so I may have written them as stupid just because of that.

Four Ways Four Different Couples Would Probably Get Together if We Wrote For Them
and maybe it's a good thing we don't (yet), but seriously, they're taking too long.

1. ease

It's a mother and a daughter.

He follows her out of the interrogation room and sits by her during the phone call. When the phone slides back into place on the receiver, she pushes the folder away just as she reaches with her other hand for his blindly, across the desk. Her fingers slip in between his and their palms meet.

They part ways by their cars downstairs. Without any thought, she moves closer to kiss him lightly, and pulls away to smile at him. "Good night, Castle."

He isn't fazed, only a little amused. He tugs her back to him and kisses her again, properly. "Good night, Detective."

2. giving in

It's only been a week since their shooting season ended, but he finds himself dialing her number on Saturday afternoon.

"Hello?"

"Hello?" he replies, bewildered. Her voices sounds different on the phone. Tinnier. He doesn't really like it.

"Who is - " she asks, and she sounds confused.

"Oh, right. Hi, Sonny. Can we talk about how lame you looked on the last day at the studios?"

"Chad?"

"Or something," he adds quickly. "I just thought - since you said we were friends - because we've known each other for three years - "

"Yeah," she says, and now that she understands what's happening, she sounds like she's going to laugh. "OK. Let's talk about how stupid your show is."

"Hey," he says, trying to sound offended, but all that sounds like is relief. No wonder she keeps telling him what a terrible actor he is. The silence stretches on for too long after that, and he stumbles as he finds something to latch on to. "Your voice sounds weird," he mumbles. He was the one who called. Why does it sound like he's totally lost control of this conversation?

"That's what the phone does, dummy," she says, and she's laughing outright now.

He barely pauses, his pick-up skills working at reflex. And for once he's tired of holding that back. "Then let's meet," he suggests, and he's surprised not by how smooth that sounds (because he's a natural at this, obviously), but by the idea itself.

He can hear her eyes widening goofily, and he grins, gaining confidence. "Uh. Sure?" she says weakly.

"Next week? I'll come over?"

"Chad, I'm in Wisconsin."

He'd thought this would be weird, but it's not. He should've known he'd come up with a great plan. Now she's the one who sounds stupid. "I know," he says smugly. "So I'll see you on Monday."

3. intervention

When Casey calls a meeting two days before what would be their third anniversary, Chuck doesn't think anything of it until he realises nothing's on the screen, and no files are on the table. He glances at Sarah, and she's frowning right back at him.

Casey sighs heavily as he pushes a note into the Castle Swear Jar, then turns to stand in front of them. "I didn't wanna do this, but you two...are fucking ridiculous."

They gape at him.

"I've had you bugged so that I've pretty much heard every conversation you've had in the last three years, and it is sickening how many times I hear you lovebirds talk about your feelings to other people."

"I don't - I don't know what you're talking about, buddy - " Chuck starts. Next to him Sarah's face is getting redder.

Casey slams his fist against the table, shutting Chuck up effectively. "If you're scared of Beckman, I'll cover for ya. Just stop being idiots. And talk." He stalks out of the room, and Chuck can barely hear him snarl, "Nauseating," as he closes the door behind him.

They both stare in front of them for a while, as he contemplates the gravity of the situation if John Casey is pushing for them. Then he decides to look at her. "So," he says cheerfully.

"Yes," she agrees. She blinks at him. "I'm not letting this affect our relationship on the field. Like, when I ask you to stay in the car - "

"OK." He grins at her. "Was that the problem? Because - "

She launches herself at him, just like their first time, and he's just as quick to respond. They pull away from the kiss so their faces are close enough that all he can see are her eyes, which crinkle at the edges as he stares dumbly at her. "At least I know how I'm going to shut you up now."

4. joy

She runs into him in the hallway when he comes looking for her. It's been a while since she's been late on set, and it's been even longer since she's beamed at him like that. It's easy to figure out what this means.

"David!" she exclaims, and then she tackles him. He falls back in surprise, and lands against the wall. "Hi!"

There's a scene they should be rehearsing right now, but he just finds himself smiling right back at her. "Hey!"

"Hey!"

"Hi."

They stare at each other stupidly, and then they both open their mouths to speak at the same time. He snaps his mouth shut. So what if they're late for a scene? "What's up?"

"Demi called," she says brightly. "David, she called two hours ago."

"Is that why you're late?"

"Yup." She looks completely unapologetic, and he's so happy for her.

"OK," he accepts. They keep grinning at each other until he realises he's still against the wall and they're still late. "Should we - "

She cuts him off by leaning up and pressing her lips against his, quickly. "Talking to her made me think about why I hadn't done that before."

His dazed response is a few seconds late. "And?"

"We are stupid," she declares, and then she kisses him again.
