Soundtrack Cuts
In 1997, Aaliyah recorded the track "Journey to the Past" for the studio soundtrack of the animated FOX film, Anastasia. The track would go on to receive an Oscar nomination for "Best Original Song" and Aaliyah performed at that year's Oscar's ceremony. She went on to become the youngest performer in the history of the Oscars.
In 1998, the song "R U That Somebody?" was released, off the movie soundtrack of Dr. Dolittle. The production, the beat, the voice. And what else about to say this song? Perfectly weaving her sensual voice through the beats produced by Timbaland--whose big break is owed to Aaliyah--the song was, & is still a cool wonder.
Then, in 2000 there was "Try Again." Another Timbaland production that only got better with it's music video. Plus, it went on to become the first song to ever reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 without being in stores. Yeah, it's essentially that awesome. And to this day, no contest, no one can quite manage a Timbaland like Aaliyah. Nelly Furtado can keep trying if she wants, though. The jam is off the Romeo Must Die film soundtrack, the first film in which she co-starred, and the same soundtrack also had the awesomely cool track "Come Back in One Piece."
The Posthumous Album
Contained her biggest hits with several unreleased tracks, including "Miss You."
An album that testified she could have gone so much further, an album that does not give her life justice. It's only a snippet of her greatest hits.

this was the last music video aaliyah made, this was her last creative endeavor in our plane of life. and the words preceding her entrance, her dancing, her singing, & her conquering her fear of the ocean all speak for itself.

"Everything is worth it.
The hard work, the times when you're tired, the times where you're a bit sad...
In the end, it's all worth it because it really makes me happy.
There's nothing better than loving what you do."

We can dream, ruminate, wonder on the what ifs.
And so at the end of the day, all we know is we lost you much too soon.
Through flaws, missteps, & breaking points you showed us that we all are human.
Through grace under fire, family love above all, & the capacity to keep walking,
you showed us your humanity.
Through your death the phrase 'the good die young' manifested.
Through your life, we learned fragility & strength.
Through you we've seen beauty at its finest.
May you rest in peace, Baby Girl.
- who was aaliyah to you? -

"It is dark in my favorite dream. Someone is following me. I don't know why. I'm scared.
Then suddenly, I lift off. Far away.
How do I feel? As if I am swimming in the air. Free. Weightless. Nobody can touch me. It's a wonderful feeling."
