"Those are very lovely flowers," Kitty offers, a little shyly. She's been practically in hiding for some time now, and her old easy manner with new people is nearly forgotten.

"Oh--!" Startled by the other woman's presence, Kyllikki turns at once and ducks her head a little. "Thank you. Thank you; they were growing outside ..."

Kitty flashes a brief smile, beginning to wonder what she could have been thinking. Yes, scaring people is a wonderful way to make friends. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you."

"You didn't frighten me," she answers, head still down--more to hide the blush than anything else. "Truly, you didn't." And, shyly, "Would you like a flower, lady?"

Kitty's smile grows a little, more confident. "I would," she says, "very much."

Then Kyllikki will offer her hand, to take Kitty out to the gardens.

Kitty takes her hand, delicately, as if it weren't the slightest bit rough. "Do you spend a lot of time out here?" she asks, casually, as if she weren't wondering if it might be a good idea to spend a little more time in the gardens herself.

"Oh, very much--I have a garden, now, and the Rose likes to be under the sunlight--it is so very warm here. Have you ever known a place so warm?" Says the woman from just south of Lapland.

Kitty shrugs. "I'd always lived in England, before I came here. I suppose it's a little warmer, or at least sunnier, here."

Kyllikki will lean her head a little against Kitty's shoulder, smiling softly. "It is so beautiful, here. Even the winters are gentle." Then she stoops to pick a white-and-violet columbine, which she offers to Kitty. "It is as lovely as you are."

"Thank you," Kitty says, a little flustered, and very much charmed. "But I'm not so lovely as that. Not so much as you, for example." And that she means, very seriously.

Looking up at her, as though honestly seeking approval, "Really, do you think it?"

"Wouldn't say it, elsewise." Kitty's really not one to go about telling girls how pretty they are, most of the time. She's much too afraid of how it might be interpreted.

One of Kyllikki's biggest problems, though, is that she doesn't care how things get interpreted, or at least doesn't think of it--so she isn't thinking anything but how grateful she is, when she leans up to give Kitty a kiss.

Kitty is almost too stunned to respond, and when she does it isn't especially coherent. "I can't -- that is to say, I'm not --"

With absolutely sincere innocence, "Not ...?"
