As a result of my losing energy/time in the middle of yesterday's rec post, today' rec list number five is all about Supernatural, and consists mostly of short fic and some vids. I've gotten more selective in what I bookmark (sometimes skipping fics I like) and less strict about my rec standards (sometimes recc'ing things I like even if they already have some recognition) This means I end up recc'ing the better part of what I bookmarked in the past few months, which is ~hard.
Sorry I don't have any cheese to go with that whine. How about some nice, upbeat, easy-going alt acoustic music instead? David Myles and Alan Jefferies sing Myles' "When It Comes My Turn".

Supernatural Fic
Finish with the following: Spoilers, warnings if applicable, rating, category and/or primary pairing, length.
And the Angel Said: "Fuck it." And All the Bullshit of Heaven Could Not Convince him Otherwise. by
proxydialogue. Author's Summary: A more detailed account of how (and why) Heaven failed to rehabilitate Cas. Hint: it was Dean's fault. How Castiel faces down the authorities of heaven, and how he came out the other side ready to work against Dean. This fic deserves an ANGST notice, because I always remember it for one particular angsty moment- but it isn't really that dark a fic. Season four spoilers, PG 13, pre-slash, Castiel (Dean-centric), 2,100.
Palo Alto Normality Blues by
pyrebi. Author's Summary: A guy doesn't just forget everything he's been taught for the past eighteen years. But sometimes, with a little perseverance, he can make himself ignore it all. I love character studies for the main and supporting cast and Pyrebi is the MASTER of all such. Her one-shots are powerful, clever, and insightful. This one grows more poignant in light of stuff in the later seasons. Spoilers for the pilot, PG-13, gen with a hint of Sam/Jess, ~1k.
Sunday-Afternoon Bridge-Club Eternity by
pyrebi. Author's Summary: Apparently there's an afterlife other than hell, and in that place-whatever it is-John gets his own gazebo. Another beautiful reflection on the nature of people and the afterlife. Spoilers through early season 4, PG, gen, John with a bit of John/Mary, ~2k.
Meadows, Illinois by
pyrebi. Author's Summary: It's not the work of your Sunday-school kinda God, that's for damn sure. This fic features an OC named Anna, as it was written long before Anna Milton was introduced. It hits all the right notes- reminding us that the carnage caused by angels, demons, and Winchesters affects the rest of their world. (All of that, and this is a stylistic masterpiece, too.) Spoilers through 4.01, PG-13, gen with an OC, 1000 words on the nose.
Nothing Matters But the Part with the Numbers by
pyrebi. Author's Summary: It would be almost frighteningly easy to step away from a time loop and simply...forget about it for a bit. Not on purpose, of course, but you know how things come up. And while it may only be a little while for the demigod creator, that could be forever in the mind of the only human who doesn't reset. Hey, remember when Supernatural used to be a horror show? Pyrebi sure does, because she brings horror to this Trickster episode with a vengeance. Spoilers for 3.11, PG-13, gen starring Sam, Dean, and the Trickster, 1300.
Days Without Feathers by
pyrebi. Author's Summary: It’s tragic, everyone says. A chance in a million-a shorted wire, an untended candle. When they get the news (one survivor, a young male), she puts a hand over her mouth and waits for the world to end. (Last Pyrebi rec for today, I swear.) There isn't really a name for this genre- it's somewhere between angst and horror. Spoilers for the first three seasons, PG-13, gen, OC perspective on canon characters, ~2k.
The Quest of the Golden Feather - Not Your Average Fairy Tale by
geaven. Author's Summary: Each night, someone’s stealing fruit from Tsar John’s magical apple tree. Prince Dean is put on the task of catching the thief. If only things were so simple. HERE, HAVE SOME RIDICULOUS FUN CRACKY AU FLUFF SLASH. The fairytale challenge produces some wonderful fun stuff, and I've got a weak spot for all the awesome ladies who are supporting characters in this. Vague spoilers (like, the existence of certain characters) through season 6. PG-13/R, AU slash and femmeslash, Dean/Castiel, 11,000.
Chasing the Sky by
daymarket. Author's Summary: Round and round the bodies they go, in the game that only ever ends one way. Ironically enough, it’s the only way that Dean ever feels alive. Prompt: Castiel Novak is an FBI agent embroiled in a deadly cat and mouse game with a mysterious and charismatic serial killer (Dean Winchester). As the game carries on and Castiel’s obsession grows, the killer might be closer than he ever suspected. This is dark, it is sick and twisted and unpleasant, and it is really well-written. Loose spoilers for the first five seasons. NC-17, trigger warning for almost everything I can think of, slash and het, Dean/Castiel and Sam/assorted canon ladies, 12,000.
Look, Up In The Sky by
Misachan. Author's Summary: In this exciting issue we cast our eyes on the mysterious metropolis of Lawrence City, and its two valiant protectors, strangers from another world striving to save the helpless citizens from the most dire threats imaginable! As threats mount from without and within, can these two unlikely partners overcome their differences in time to defeat the deadliest enemy they've ever faced? Or in a world where smoke can dress itself in human skin, can this tale only end in tragedy? Face Front, True Believers, and find out! More AU! But this time the adorable superhero kind. There's a tragic shortage of Sam, but we get a truly alien Cas. PG-13, slash, Dean/Castiel, 18,000.
The Syntax of Things by
dotfic. Author's Summary: After the events of "Lucifer Rising," Sam and Dean take refuge at Bobby's, where the boys start to learn to be brothers again while they plan their next move. Chuck shows up with an injured Castiel, forcing Dean to deal with his conflicted feelings. Meanwhile, the apocalypse has started, the death count is rising, and Lucifer is determined to get at Sam. But hiding only works for so long. This is a classic which gets limited attention. That is a pity because this fic captures the overwhelming odds and the fear that echoed through seasons 4 and 5. It's a great apocalypse fic. The whole gang is here, too, including scared!bastard Chuck, Anna, Jimmy, and Bobby, and starring Team Free Will. Check header for trigger warnings, NC-17, gen and slash, Dean/Cas with ensemble, 23,000.
World Won't Let Me Go by
firebugg. Author's Summary: There’s one more thing you can do for me. A season 6 bit, character study of Castiel, featuring Dean/Lisa. (I think a lot of Tumblr fics don't get recc'ed outside of Tumblr- why is that?.) Spoilers for 6.21, R, slash with gen and het, one-sided Castiel/Dean, Dean/Lisa, ~1000.
One by One: Objects Defined by
lexhibition. Author's Summary: It's hard enough for Castiel to work out what species he's supposed to be, let alone what sexuality he's supposed to be. This one gets a lot of love, and that love is totally deserved. It goes AU towards the end of 5.22, and deals with the fall-out that would probably result of Cas were to become human for good. Spoilers through season 5, R, slash (kinda), one-sided Castiel/Dean, 6000.

White Blank Page by
heathyr-iltp. Dean/Castiel, unrequited love, to Mumford & Sons 'White Blank Page', spoilers through the end of season 6. A very nice shipping vid which uses dialogue mixed with the music to make its point. The colors at the beginning are amazing, and I really like some of the artistic conceits.
Evil Angel by Asmothesly. Gen, theme: Angels, to Breaking Benjamin's 'Evil Angel', violence; spoilers through 5.10. Beautifully executed, and the thematic exploration of violence among angels- for good, for bad- is really impressive. It's a great reminder that whatever the angels of Supernatural are, they are never innocent little woobies. [Disclaimer: The style isn't what I usually go for, but I love the result. Additional disclaimer: This one has a higher view rate than I would usually rec.]
Poison and Wine by Elisa. Dean/Castiel, to The Civil Wars' 'Poison and Wine'. Her editing is beautiful and poignant, and as a shipper myself I enjoyed the lack of manipulation- this is all longing looks and casual touches from the show. After the season 6 finale, the shipper in me also appreciates any and all explorations of the dangerous, destructive qualities of love. [Disclaimer: I almost didn't link this because the clip quality is low, and the white balance is off by a lot in some of them, I think unintentionally. I think the song and the editing make up for it, though.] Clips through the end of season 6.
Cosmic Love: Team Free Will Versus the Agents of Fate by aquaenumen. Gen, Florence + The Machine's 'Cosmic Love'. Vidder summary: What would you rather have: peace, or freedom? Spoilers through the end of season 5; a reflection on the team.
Baby in a Trenchcoat by MoogleCrunch. Ending on a funny note! Justin Beiber- no, really, just say that it's ironic. Lighthearted commentary on Dean/Cas moments. Music is intercut with dialogue.
