I just got "Goddamnit" on vinyl. It's fucking awesome. There is this great intro on the liner notes by Brendan Kelly, vocalist/bassist of the lawrence arms. Here are some parts:
"You know that feeling of having wasted your life? I'm not talking about looking back to faded, half remembered olden days from some wrinkly shell. I'm referring to waking up and thinking, "whoa, last night was a complete blur, I made a real dick of myself in front of that girl I can't stop thinking about and I barfed in the sick at the bar. I'm wasting my life. What's wrong with me?" That's wasting your life. Little moments that swirl, fade, and descend into obscurity, never to be retrieved."
"So, it's 1999 and I'm standing in a crappy bar with my friend Jerry, and we're watching the trio play, and they're playing my personal favorite on the record, "My Little Needle." Jerry turns to me when Matt sings the line, "Lately I've been feeling dead inside, like my guts have dried up and died. But every night I water 'em back to life," and says, "You know, Matt's lyrics make me feel great about my choices, even the shitty ones." And that was it."
"It was the vibe on that first record. "Goddamnit" really conveyed the spirit of wasting your life. Throwing up on the floor in front of the girl you love, being faceless broke dick in a world of faceless broke dicks, drunk, high, pathetic, and somehow fine with it all. "Goddamnit" is the celebration of the shitty, and the happy chorus about being totally fucked and in love with someone who doesn't know you even exist."
"And while I thikn that thoughts of suicide have never sounded so laid back and cool as they do in that verse of "Trouble Breathing" and that drinking beer with a girl you're not supposed to be fucking is often cool, but rarely as sweet as it is in "Sorry About That." And that capturing the awesomeness of feeling totally helpless has been attempted for a while by thousands of punk kids, but has probably never been done as well as it is here, you all already know that. That's why there's a reissue of this record. That's why the trio is the trio. That's why I'm writing this shit. We're all wasting our lives. Some people just know how to sing about it. What dicks."
If I only had one album to listen to the rest of my life, it'd probably be "Goddamnit."
