If you're looking for a satisfying summary of my life over the past few days, or an analysis of what I've been thinking about lately, or a hot retelling of my latest weekend romp, then please, go somewhere else.

However, if you're looking for a pointless way to waste about ten minutes, then read on.

Sean Curry's Musical Discoveries of the Last Undefined Period of Time

Panic! At the Disco
These guys are real good. They take the recent dance punk/rock fad and really increase the dance part. While they've been put in the whole punk/emo/whatever genre with Fall Out Boy and the like, they do more than just the stereotypical two guitars, bass, and drums. They've got pianos, synthesizers (sp?), I've heard some horns and string instruments too, and all played well. Plus the lyrics are very different from everything else out there today. Just the words they use, the ways they use them. I'm very impressed by these guys.

Bed Light for Blue Eyes
Right now I'm obsessed with these guys. Amazing. Just amazing. They've got something of a metal/emo sound to them. But they are really set apart. Most "singers" out there today would simply scream over the music. But this singer is a singer of the highest order, a force of operatic greatness in a pissy-scream world. The singer was accepted to the Boston Conservatory of Music on a full ride just for his voice. So he's an amazing singer. Like, really, really good, the kid could do opera if he wanted to, no sweat. But he dropped out of college to become a rock star. This guy is doing things with his voice and this music that other bands wish they could do. Plus, he was born in Ecuador and sings IN SPANISH sometimes. He's even re-recording their album, all in spanish, for a later release. Absolutely phenomenal band. Look for what these guys are going to do.
A Jersey band, no less.

Atreyu
Not much I'm going to say about this band, as I'm kind of late for this one. But I will say that while I'm usually not a fan of the screaming/roaring metal stuff that everyone is trying to do these days, because most of them do it very poorly, these guys really do it well. The guitars are great, the riffs and solos are perfect. And they do incorporate some singing in there as well. These guys are one of the best metal bands out there today.

Killswitch Engage
Again, I kind of missed the boat on this one. Same opinion as Atreyu. They put in a little more singing than Atreyu, though, which I'm a big supporter of. Also, some very surprising lyrics for a metal band in today's music scene.

Motion City Soundtrack
These guys aren't exactly new either, but they are for me. I first heard them when I went to see Fall Out Boy about a month ago. I was really impressed with their singer's stage presence, and the way that he doesn't just recite lyrics in tune with the music supporting him, but he actually acts out what he's singing with his face and body, in a way. I'm a fan of the keyboard/moog guy, he's good at it and I loved his handstands.

Gym Class Heroes
Rap (good rap) done over an emo band. Very, very good. A new sound, a good sound. The rapper's very good at "spittin' rhymes" and his rhymes are actually pretty clever. They have one song, "Taxi Driver", where in the song he uses band names as part of the lyrics. Very cool.

I've probably got a few more that I'm just forgetting about. I'll add them later if I'm so inclined.

Excelsior!
_Sean
