Oneshot: Many Moons by Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae reminds me of a female André 3000 from Outkast, particularly her dancing style and…shall we say… unique wardrobe choices. She’s also collaborated with Big Boi in the past, which really only underlines it for me.
Anyway, today’s selection is from her Metropolis Chase Suite album. I guess it’s kind of a rock opera, although that doesn’t really cover the genre of the music, which would probably fall between hip hopera and popera? The story revolves around a cyborg named Cindi Mayweather, who has fallen in love with a human and, according to the rules of her universe, must be hunted down and destroyed. The concept of the video is a fashion show/cyborg auction with Cindi as live entertainment.
I love the sheer weirdness of this video. Janelle is this adorable little thing dressed like a waiter at a country club, but rocking an afrohawk and cutting loose James Brown style. Look out for her forwards moonwalk and tell me that doesn’t blow your mind.
