Character Information:
Name: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryuu
Series (and canon name if different from above): The World Ends With You
Age: 15
Poke-profession: Hobo aka pokémon trainer and mischief maker.
Home Town: Solaceon Town
Current town: Veilstone City

Appearance: Joshua is short and skinny and appears to be in a dire need of a sandwich, though he'd prefer to eat something more refined. He has a pale complexion, purple eyes and styled ambiguously coloured hair that earns him the nicknames of 'dustbunny' or 'mop-head' by the unappreciative. Even so, he's surprisingly well groomed, wearing simple yet fashionable clothing -- his usual attire consists of a light dress shirt, semi-casual dress pants and a fluffy, poofy coat -- that are well kept, despite all his travels. Part of it may be because Joshua doesn't seem to walk around very much. Why, when he had a dodrio who was perfectly fine with chauffeuring him?

Outside of towns and cities, Joshua is hardly seen without his pokémon, riding his dodrio with a duskull and murkrow trailing after them. To the more superstitious of people, that kind of setup is nothing but the sign of bad luck. But often those fears are alleviated by Joshua's almost constant smile and easy, relaxed manner... until people realise Joshua's smile is nothing but the grin of a prankster. It's rare to see his pokémon in their pokéballs, and when you don't see the murkrow or duskull around, you can almost be certain they are on a mission of chaos.

Personality: At first, Joshua seems to be quite the sociable sort, giving strangers easy smiles and subjecting anyone and everyone to light teasing. He tends to easily fall into the step of conversations since he can talk about almost anything, from the usefulness of pokémon to the huge magikarp someone caught the other day, to life, the universe and everything. Joshua tends to treat everything as a game, conversations included, and will just as often ask questions or present statements that will make others uncomfortable as he will make polite (or not-so-polite) small talk. He finds people interesting, and plays these little 'games' to pick apart their brains and analyse them.

But despite his sociable nature, Joshua has difficulties getting close to other people. When he was young, he was ostracised by other children due to rumours of him being a bringer of bad luck. He tried to reach out to the other children, to no avail. And from then on, Joshua unconsciously decided to push people away so that his ostracisation was on his terms, not theirs. Because of this, he picked up habits that make it difficult to get close to him -- an evasiveness that makes it difficult to know what he's thinking, an unsympathetic ear to others' troubles and a tendency to be a complete nuiscance three quarters of the time. Joshua views himself as being surrounded by people, but not being a part of humanity. He prefers this, though; he'd rather be an observer than a participant.

Even though Joshua doesn't get attached to others, he is ridiculously loyal to his pokémon despite the fact two of his three pokémon are the reason he was called a bringer of bad luck in his hometown. He's been with all three pokémon for at least five years, his dodrio (then doduo) being 'his' ever since he was a baby. More than five years of mischief making together has given him a fondness for them, even if he shows little sign of it.

Abilities: Joshua is quite smart, using both logic and intuition to deduce people's thoughts and predict their actions. His memory is better than most (but not quite up to photographic), and combined with quick thinking and smooth talking, has gotten him out of a fair number of scrapes. He also has the tendency to be incredibly annoying to at least half the population of Sinnoh, making it difficult for many people to like him.

History: Joshua comes from a well-to-do family, his parents being a branch of the wealthy Kiryuu family. While Joshua's parents didn't have a paycheck nearly as much as the main family, they were still very well off from riding the success of the Kiryuus. Even though Joshua and his parents lived in Solaceon Town, rather than a city like the rest of the Kiryuus, Joshua's relatives occasionally came to visit, and vice versa. When he was home in Solaceon with no relatives to attend to, Joshua could be seen riding around on the family doduo on small errands (or just to exercise the doduo) half the time. The rest of the time, he could be spotted reading his way through a pile of books, becoming a kid who was possibly too intelligent for his age. Life was good and comfortable for both Joshua and his parents.

But it all changed when Joshua took the doduo out for a ride outside Soleceon Town and lost track of the time. Wandering around looking for the way back home, he ended up near the Lost Tower by nightfall. When he saw a beady pair of eyes and a beak suddenly appear from the shadows, Joshua freaked out and commanded the doduo to run away, which the pokémon speedily obliged. Luckily they safely managed to find their way home, and Joshua thought that was the end of it.

Soon after, Joshua noticed a pair of eyes and a shadowy beak following him at night as he went about on small errands around town. Every time he tried to directly look at them, though, they would disappear, and he eventually taught himself to ignore them. However, the locals began to notice a murkrow following Joshua around at night, and since seeing murkrows at night was believed to be bad luck, rumours that Joshua was a bringer of bad luck began to spread around Solaceon.

However, that wasn't the last of it.

Shortly after, while he was buying a few things from the Pokémart, Joshua was scared into tears by a duskull who had wandered too far from the Lost Tower. Luckily, a passerby managed to subdue and catch the duskull before anything worse could happen. He gave the pokéball containing the duskull to Joshua, claiming Joshua had to learn to overcome his fears after being scared by the duskull. However, for a long time, Joshua couldn't bring himself to let the duskull out of the pokéball.

Unfortunately for Joshua, after that incident, the rumours of Joshua being a bringer of bad luck began to have more substance (or so the people of Solaceon believed). Duskulls, after all, were supposed to only startle bad kids, and it was rare for duskulls to be seen so far away from the Lost Tower. As a result of these rumours, the other children his age ostracised him. Joshua tried to talk and play with them, but they were afraid to talk to him and refused to let him join their games. When he tired of it, Joshua finally let the duskull out from her pokéball, and told her, "You can go through walls, right? Go and scare those other kids for me!" and she did.

Seeing the results of his little prank, life in Solaceon became a game to Joshua. He called his duskull Reaper, making elaborate setups to trick the other kids into believing his duskull was the Grim Reaper wanting to take their souls away. Some of them offered their pocket money to make the 'Grim Reaper' leave them, money that found its way into Joshua's pockets. However, once their parents figured out their children's nightmares were being caused by Joshua's duskull, he became labelled a troublemaker as well. Joshua withdrew and stopped his shenanigans at first, but when his relationship with others in town didn't change, soon developed a slightly caustic personality, irritating others and causing mischief. No one really wanted to talk to him or be associated with him, so Joshua figured he might as well make things fun for himself, rather than become a hermit.

When he turned ten, his parents officially gave Joshua the family doduo, now a dodrio, and sent him off to go 'experience the world'. Joshua knew that was only part of the truth; they also wanted him to stop soiling the Kiryuu name with his trouble-making in Solaceon Town, hoping the outside world would be able to rein him in. He didn't object, wanting to get out of Solaceon himself, and left soon after. However, there was still the matter of the murkrow, who was still following him around. Slightly annoyed at the murkrow's continual stalkings, Joshua sent his duskull to scare her out of hiding. Finally having the murkrow cornered, he gave her an ultimatum: either stalk him in the open and follow his commands, or bugger off before she becomes his next dinner. She chose to stay around.

So Joshua travelled around Sinnoh on his dodrio, a duskull and murkrow in tow, and built himself a small reputation: wherever he rode, trouble would follow in his wake. As he travelled, Joshua mellowed out a little since talking to people wasn't like talking to a brick wall now, and quickly picked up on the intricacies of social interaction he'd mostly missed out on in Solaceon. However, even outside of of Solaceon, he still encountered people with small minds. But because of the few inspirational people he met along the way, Joshua didn't lose his faith that people could become better than his previous experiences.

Early in his travels, he met a man who offered him tips and tricks on how to live on little to no money, which included how to be really good at poker. Joshua took all the man's lessons on board... and improved on them; Joshua preferred his travels to be as comfortable as possible, and he'd rather not appear a hobo like his teacher. However, Joshua's shenanigans and pseudo-hoboism soured his relatives' opinions of him, and while they didn't outright disown him, he became the black sheep of the Kiryuu family.

But Joshua couldn't bring himself to care. How could he? His next destination was Veilstone City, and he knew he was going to have a lot of fun!

Pokemon information
Name: Shibuya
Breed: Dodrio
Gender: Male
Personality: As a doduo, Shibuya (called Shibu almost 100% of the time) was a fairly docile, if somewhat jumpy and overly cautious bird. He was a speedy bird who loved nothing more to run, and run he did, all over Solaceon Town. When Shibu grew up into a dodrio, he kept his love for running, despite becoming a far more irritable bird, often bickering with itself and Joshua's other two pokémon. However, Shibu almost never argues with Joshua, being quite protective of the kid who took him running all the time for over ten years. Shibu doesn't like to think much, as all it does is make his heads spin, and leaves all the thinking to Joshua. As long as Joshua keeps taking him running, Shibu is content to follow Joshua's commands.

History: Shibu was caught by Joshua's parents when he was a young doduo, and when Joshua was born, became his childhood playmate. When Joshua grew older, Shibu often carried Joshua around Solaceon Town, and occasionally outside of town. As they had practically grown up together, Shibu became Joshua's confidant, listening to Joshua talk of things the bird didn't understand. However, when Joshua shut himself off from the rest of the world after the incidents with the murkrow and duskull, those talks becamse silences instead. Still, Shibu was there for him, and when Shibu grew up to become a dodrio, he remained faithful to Joshua and became Joshua's taxi all over Sinnoh.

Name: Reaper
Breed: Duskull
Gender: Female
Personality: A mischievous duskull who likes nothing more than to cause trouble, and in the hands of Joshua, does so. She likes the sound of crying and fear, though angry shouts come a close second. She does as Joshua commands because he's far more creative in wreaking havoc than she would be on her own, and she'd rather not be stuck in a pokéball indefinitely again. When Joshua doesn't have anything in particular for Reaper to do, Reaper wanders off to do her own hunting, occasionally causing Joshua some grief when her prey happens to be a small child.

History: Reaper is a duskull who wandered just a little too far from the Lost Tower in search of more people to scare. She terrorised a young Joshua in Solaceon Town's Pokémart, but was captured by passerby before she could cause any more grief. Although the pokéball was passed on to Joshua, she was left in the pokéball for a year before Joshua let her out for the first time to scare the other children in Solaceon. As she enjoyed scaring the other kids, she obliged. Reaper had no reason to leave her trainer, since Joshua kept her fed and amused, and she returned the favour by serving Joshua in his mischief making.

Name: Conductor (previously Stalker)
Breed: Murkrow
Gender: Female
Personality: A murkrow enamoured with the shinies (and Joshua's vague coloured hair) who thinks too much and does too little. She has a tendency to fixate, and as a result, isn't very aware of anything aside from whatever it is she is focused on. Although she plots to steal all of Joshua's hair, Conductor spends so much time observing him in order to gather more information and plan for the unexpected that ten years later, she still hasn't stolen as much as a strand of Joshua's hair. She follows Joshua's commands on the basis that she has more data to form a plan from, but she admittedly has fun causing trouble and stealing other shinies while she plots.

History: Conductor stalked Joshua ever since he accidentally wandered too close to the Lost Tower, causing rumours of Joshua being bad luck to spread around Solaceon City. However, the reason the murkrow was stalking Joshua was mostly because of his hair, which was light and shiny (in her eyes), and she thought it would make a really pimping lining for a nest. But because she kept on planning and planning and never actually put any of those plans into action, she kept to the shadows and stalked him for a good five years. Just as Joshua was about to leave Solaceon City, he directly confronted the murkrow with the help of his duskull and gave her an ultimatum once she was cornered: join his party, or leave. Still wanting Joshua's hair for a nest, murkrow joined Joshua's little group, and was dubbed Stalker. However, after a brief stint in Hearthome City's Contest Hall, Joshua discovered Murkrow was good at keeping a beat no matter how it changed, and joked that she should be a Conductor, and the name stuck.

Roleplay Samples: (AIM FOR THE HORN)
Third Person:
It's been a couple of years since he left Solaceon Town, and Joshua thinks life couldn't have been better since he left the small town filled with small minds. Shibu slowed to a easy trot before stopping to allow Joshua to dismount. As Shibu went off for a more exhilarating run on his own, Joshua took a seat on on the grass, watching the river nearby. He wasn't one for the wilderness, always preferring to hang out in cities or town. There were more people to watch, that was for sure.

Speaking of people...

"Hey, you're a trainer right? Battle me!"

Joshua inwardly sighed. Catching and battling pokémon really wasn't his thing. Too much effort, really. But he knew kids like these wouldn't take no for an answer. Leisurely getting to his feet -- if the kid wanted to battle him so much, she could wait -- he gave the other trainer a wide grin. "Normal battles get boring when you've been around as long as me." Joshua loosely curled a hand by the side of his face before giving the other trainer a wave of his hand. "How about we make things a little more interesting?"

First Person/Forum Post:
[Written in a notepad]
I suppose your parents never taught you not to read other people's diaries without their permission. I'd be ashamed if I was you, rifling through my belongings just to see what secrets I might have ferreted away. But I'll forgive you out of the kindness of my heart; your PokeNet is quite the pretty thing. New model too, come to think of it. I like the keychain, by the way.

Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. And remember that next time you want to find out more about me, all you need to do is ask!
