Today I'm excited about the release of all the new Kubrick DVDs. I picked up my two favorites, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and EYES WIDE SHUT and will be scurrying back to the store to pick up the others as soon as possible. I am a tad disappointed that BARRY LYNDON wasn't part of the new collection as that's probably my second favorite after CLOCKWORK. I love Milena Canonero's costume designs in that film. For the longest time I had thought it was Vivienne Westwood -- no clue why. I think I read it somewhere.
CLOCKWORK was the first Kubrick film I ever saw. I was only like twelve or thirteen at the time, but I remember being both terrified and amazed while watching it. I probably didn't understand it all at that age but I got enough of it to realize what it meant. I still get creeped out by some of the music from the movie. It was fun to do a reference in the introduction to the 4th BLUE MONDAY trade that I worked on. Probably scarier than the whole entire movie is seeing me in leather drawn by Chynna. Ugh.
I know that EYES WIDE SHUT is probably Kubrick's least liked film, but I always loved it. To me, it's like watching a painting. The imagery throughout the film is mind blowing, provacative and even skin crawling at times. Plus there's that film-stealing scene with Alan Cumming as the hotel concierge. Timbaland used a lot of stills and clips from the infamous "orgy" scene during his segment of Justin Timberlake's FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS tour that was accompanied by his own remix to the SAW theme which made for a supremely spooky few minutes and I have been wanting to rewatch the movie ever since.
