American obesity rates are skyrocketing and Americans are constantly being criticized for being lethargic and apathetic. Like many things, weight problems can begin as a child. The government keeps taking things away from the students, but not all problems can be resolved with reduction. Instead of taking away food, the government should instill more physical education within the California school system.
Recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger passed to bills in efforts to "terminate obesity." The laws are a direct hit at the foods sold in California schools. The first law, SB 965, will allow only milk, unsweetened water and beverages with at least fifty percent fruit or vegetable juice. The second law, SB 12, is aimed at setting stricter limitations on the sugar, fat and calorie content in all foods sold at school. Many students will argue that the loss of choice beverages, such as soda, drastically changes their day. The right of choice of consumption of licit substances is a right to the people of America, and limiting our foods at school is dismissing that right. A bold prediction states that this attempt to limit California obesity rates will miserably fail. This is due to the knowledge of today's society. Students who have gained significant weight in childhood will only continue to seek indulgence in the numerous varieties of other innutritious foods sold on school campuses such as chips and candy. Students should be trusted with the responsibility of making their own decisions. When today's student graduate, they will have the freedom of eating and drinking what ever they want, and unless the governor makes them illegal, they will continue drink soda and eating unhealthy if they do now. If nothing more, the epiphany of having the decision to consume choice products will lead to a much quicker road to obesity than students were at before.
