History: The son of two scientists in the employ of the Shin-Ra Company, Sephiroth was born as part of a scientific experiment known as the Jenova Project. The Project aimed to instil human beings with supernatural qualities by the use of a chemical compound named 'Jenova', a compoundsalvaged from a woman's radiation-wracked deceased body. It was theorised that the purified compound would give the subject psychic powers. When Sephiroth was born, the project seemed to be a failure. Whilst he was born with abnormal hair and eyes, he had no any supernatural abilities whatsoever. As he grew older, it was apparant that while he was stronger, faster and more resilient than a child his age should be, he had no actual abilities. Throughout his childhood, he was still injected with the Jenova cells, gaining a drug-like dependancy on them, although he himself is unaware of this.
At the age of eight, Sephiroth managed to escape from the laboratory. The government's watch on Shin-Ra had increased to the point where sending any organised group to pursue him would draw enough attention to unravel the entire Project, and it was assumed that Sephiroth would die on the streets, and that the results of the project could be easily replicated with another child. Neither of these facts proved to be true. Sephiroth survived, although he forcibly blocked out the memories of his past life. He was taken in by social services and placed in an orphanage, assumed to be another abandoned child in a bad part of town. Sephiroth himself came to believe this.
In the orphanage, Sephiroth had no friends, although he preferred it that way. He kept to himself, making no effort to adhere to rules and generally doing as he pleased. (Fortunately, doing as he pleased meant martial arts training and extensive studying rather than rebellious acting out.) Although extremely physically fit, he did suffer withdrawal from the Jenova compound, something which was interpreted by all around him as an illness. When he was ten years old, Sephiroth won a city-wide jujitsu tournament, defeating people almost twice his age. His prodigal talent drew attention from many, most especially the sinfully-wealthy Shinra family. They became his unofficial benefactors, paying for equipment and lessons from the most masterful teachers. Ironically, the connection of Sephiroth's identity was not immediately made, most likely because President Shinra himself knew very little of the Jenova Project.
At age thirteen, Sephiroth was formally adopted by the Shinra family and became the first member (and default leader) of the SOLDIER program. He continued attending school, but went into an intensive training program. In addition to this, he was injected with two substances. One, mako, is the Shin-Ra Company's little secret, a top secret chemical that acts similar to a steroid and drastically increases the subject's strength and endurance capacities. The other, Jenova, is more mysterious and still experimental. It is also the same chemical with Sephiroth was instilled with as a child; as such, he instantly had a massive reaction to it and it drastically increased his speed and reflexes. It also instantly ended the ‘sickness’ he’d previously endured.
Sephiroth left the Shinra home when he was sixteen (albeit into an apartment building owned by the family), continuing the same intense training. As more people were recruited to SOLDIER, he became a prolific member and was admired by several new recruits, even taking over some of the teaching work. He has recently taken his role as the leader of SOLDIER more fully, and can often be found holed up in his office mulling over paperwork. As he has grown older, Sephiroth has taken a larger and larger role in running SOLDIER. Whereas five years ago he was content for President Shinra to do everything, now he wants to control virtually every aspect of the program. However, he avoids any personal contact with his fellow SOLDIERs and is still largely mysterious.
Personality: A cold and distant man, although he does possess a dry and bitter sense of humour. Sephiroth is cool and detached from all those around him, and tends to keep away from any and all unnecessary social interaction. It is not that he feels uncomfortable around others, or that he is incapable of socialising - he merely has no wish to make friends. Despite all of this, Sephiroth is capable of being personable and even charming, if the situation calls for it. He is generally a polite and respectful person around his equals, although very cold and distant. His sense of humour is dry, bitter and black, and can often be perceived as mocking by the more sensitive around him, although Sephiroth rarely finds a need to personally insult someone. If anything, he's not always entirely aware of how his words are perceived.
Perhaps because of his twisted upbringing, Sephiroth does not seem to possess the full palette of emotions, so to speak. Others being affectionate towards him doesn't necessarily make him uncomfortable, but he lacks the ability to show any affection back. He feels no qualms about harming others, even innocents, if he feels it is necessary, but he will also save lives, as long as it does not interfere with him. Sephiroth never acts impulsively, and if he even feels certain emotions such as empathy, love and pity, he never acts on them. In many ways, he seems to be an incomplete being, or perhaps the cost for his physical power is a portion of his emotions.
Sephiroth, although outwardly loyal to the Shin-Ra, has his own agenda and constantly manipulates events to his own benefit. Because of his lack of personal attachments, he is willing able to sacrifice virtually anything in the name of his goal, although exactly what his goal is is a mystery to even him. For all of his life, Sephiroth has had the feeling that he has been awaiting some event, and until that event occurs, he must work to make sure the world stays exactly as it is; as such, Sephiroth frequently plays those who would seek to change the world against one another. Sephiroth seems to enjoy very few things in life, and does not even seem to be fully aware of what he does enjoy and why he should seek for it. At best, Sephiroth is cool and calculating. At worst, he is bitter and melancholy.
Powers: Since birth, Sephiroth has been faster, stronger, more resilient and has had better reflexes than those his age. This, combined with his aptitude for fighting, have led him to seek the life of a warrior. As such, he is extremely physically strong, and trained with a variety of weapons. Guns and swords of all varieties, more specialty weapons such as nunchaku and hand to hand fighting are all things that Sephiroth has at least some experience with. His weapon of choice is the Masamune, a katana. It is said that only he is able to wield it, but it's unclear whether this is because it has some sacred bond to him, or just because he's the only person skilled enough.
Aside from his physical prowess, Sephiroth also possesses a dark power inside him, the power of Super Nova. Super Nova (an apt name, since Sephiroth himself seems to super nova with power) is a strong blast of pure psychokinetic energy that causes explosive results. However, it damages Sephiroth to the point of near death. He has only used it once, and it can only be unleashed in moments of great physical or emotional distress. He is unable to control it; as a result, he suppresses it.
Anything extra: Sephiroth is the leader of the SOLDIER program. As of late, he has taken to personally monitoring who is admitted into SOLDIER, and whether cadets should be allowed to advance or not. He also leads many of the classes, and spends most of his time in his office attached to the first class dojo. Sephiroth currently lives with Nana and Chii, the former because he is aware of her diclonious heritage and wants to keep an eye on her (he shared a brief rivalry with the diclonious Lucy and is as such aware of their capabilities), and the latter because through a series of genuine coincidences, he became convinced she's a government-created android killing machine. (Sephiroth is generally right about his hunches on people, but when he's wrong, he's very wrong.)
Sephiroth’s birthday is the sixth of June, and is also one of his best kept secrets. (...also, he was twenty at the start of Sanctum, but yeah. June happened. Hooray for consistancy.)
In canon: A war hero of the Shin-Ra, Sephiroth was known to the world as a great General. He was also a very cold and isolated man, however, and a man with many secrets. He went missing five years ago after a disastrous mission to Nibelheim.
