Chapter Whatever: After the blast
Beatrice opened her eyes to see the road empty of people. Her first conscious breathe was followed by a hacking cough as her lungs cleared themselves of the dust that was hanging in the air. She slowly pushed herself up off the pavement and debris. Aden was next to her telling her something she couldn't quite make out. Everything seemed to be muted by a loud ringing in her ears. He pulled her close, his hands on either side of her face, pushing back her hair. His hands were covered with in blood. His blood, she thought vaguely, or mine? She wasn't even sure where Aden had come from. He was suppose to be on guard all day. They were going to visit him, so why was he here. The ringing seemed to prevent her from forming any coherent thought. Beatrice tried to reach out, to see if he was wounded, but he kept pushing her hands away. The blood couldn't be his she realized when she got a good look him.
Aden's hand skimmed over her looking for damage. He gently pushed her back so she was lying down again, Beatrice realized that this was the most he'd touched her since they met. She laughed, which quickly turned into a cough, and tried to tell him when she noticed that he still touching her. He'd stopped looking for wounds and now he was just touching her. Aden, the major who didn't understand people's need to constantly touch, had one hand on her shoulder and his other was placed gently on the side of her neck. Any other time she would have called it a caress, but now the only thing she could think about was who's blood was on his hands.
At that point she noticed Aden's eye kept flickering to the left. She felt her stomach drop as she realized that something was off. Tommy was with her when she went to see Aden.
