She wasn't coming back, no one was. I took him a moment to absorb the knowledge that he was going to have to fend for himself. All he had to do was get up, get to the street, and he would be fine. Two doors were all that stood between him and safety. He just had to move.
Zack moved his hand away from the hole in his side for a moment. The blood was still flowing freely, but it had slowed. Taking a deep breathe, he pushed his feet into the ground; sliding his back slowly up the wall. A stifled sob escaped his lips as he tried to keep conscious.
He didn't know when he started moving, but at this point he didn't care. Once in the hallway, Zack started towards the door, using the wall for support. Almost there, he repeated to himself over and over again as the door got closer. His body was screaming in pain but he knew that once he got outside everything would be fine. Just a few more steps and everything would be fine.
Zack paused for just a moment when he reached the door. Laughing softly to himself, he could taste something metallic in his mouth. He had done it, one more moment and he'd be safe. He reached out turned the handle.
The door didn't budge.
