on first looking into DC's fourteenth movie

There's probably a reason why I'm not making much sense right now, and that reason is probably that I'm still howling with laughter over here. So y'all get a review!

1. the plot. Yeah, okay, I've got this steampunk love in me that made me flail a bit over the aircraft/dirigible thing - seriously, the end credits were awesome - and there was the whole case within a case thing that was well woven in and out of the characters' relationships - Kaito&Ran, Ran&Conan, Conan&Kaito, Sonoko&Ran - so the plot was overall interesting and basic DC-tradition, which is always nice if a bit repetitive. It's like a well-loved glove that reminds you of your teenage years and all the embarrasment thereof, but is still warm, anyway. I liked that - being reminded that I love this fandom, and with good reason - that I love all the characters and the awkward bits and the general design of it all. It was a good surprise, remembering that.

2. but. Seriously. The whole thing was just complete, utter crack. The whole oh my god it's a bomb - no wait, no, let's just cut both wires and see if WE'RE ALL GOING TO EXPLODE oh it's fine I was totally right about that one episode was amazing. Haibara's waxing maudlin up at the sky before going all ... hey. I'm joking at Conan's O... kay then was amazing. The whole JESUS CHRIST LETHAL VIRUS oh wait no theme was amazing. The whole how the fuck can Kogoro just keep on sleeping oh wait no oh okay moment was amazing. It's like the scriptwriters just went Fuck it and decided to pile up red herring after red herring after red herring after THEY'RE NOT THE BAD GUYS WE'RE THE BAD GUYS NOW EVERYBODY'S GOING TO DIE A TERRIBLE DEATH AHAHAH.

(me: /blink)

3. and, just. You know. Kaito. With glasses! He's adorable. And that grin of his when he picks up the kid's soccer ball, aww. <3 and I dunno, it's just like he's got PMS or something - one moment he's all smooth and seductive and perfect and the next he's got his hand on Ran's arse. Just, what? ... and then I remembered that this is Kaito, and went, oh okay then. But they did crank up his usual personality all the way up to eleven in this. Basically he snaps from hello, I'm pretending to be your boyfriend because I clearly didn't think this one through but you kind of look a little like my best friend and you're kind of cute so let's get on with it to /JUMPING OUT OF A FREAKIN' AIRCRAFT, MAN to o hai thar little goat 8) /petpet to JESUS WHERE ARE YOU PUTTING THAT HAND GET THAT OUT to /tries to eat Ran's mouth off to yeaaah, I totally had that one covered, bye now! /flies off

... was anybody else cracking up completely at the goat part? because. Seriously. What the fuck?

4. buuuut we had sweet moments, too. Sonoko's crying after Ran was carried off to the smoking lounge was very touching, Genta maning up when Conan tells him he might have contracted the virus was great, and the little father-daughter moment between Ran and Kogoro when they try to bring down the pirates is something we so very rarely see in canon, it was almost surprising. (Actually, I liked really Kogoro in this. When, y'know, he's not sleeping, which is, like, half the time, but. Yeah. I liked him.)

So. Yeah. I liked it. It's not the best movie ever, and it's not the best DC movie ever, for that matter (that one will always, always be the 10th), but it was nice, and a whole lot of fun, and altogether a good moment. I liked liking it, if that makes sense. (It doesn't?)

reviewing and its lack of artistry, fandom is a safe corner of my brain, dc:mk
