Taking a few minutes off Shakespeare and Katherina to consider Arthur Conan Doyle and Joan Watson: a quick outlook on Elementary (mostly because this question is asked me a lot these days? not sure why there's a sudden outpouring of What do you think about Elementary, Sara).

So! Considering this preview:

why are these things always turning out to be incredibly long? )

so much tl;dr i'm sorry, fandom is a safe corner of my brain, lucy liu is flawless everyone go home, spoilers!, what is this work you speak of, meta is my middle name, elementary, sherlock

YES

JUST

YES TO ALL OF THIS

I have a lot of varied feelings about Elementary, and you've literally touched on every single one of them.

The vague "no homo" thing they have going on in Sherlock makes me pretty fucking uncomfortable, too. I'm hoping they stop it entirely in series 3; it doesn't feel authentic to the characters, and skirts a line between frustrating and offensive to me that I'm tired of dealing with.

Ha, yes, after the first trailer was released, I saw a couple of people complaining about JLM's "terrible British accent". I once saw someone make the same complaint about Hugh Laurie. Facepalms everywhere.

My god, at this point, both the people either hating on it or obsessively stanning it and bashing Sherlock are getting on my nerves.Aaand that's it in a nutshell. The majority of my experience of fandom is on tumblr, which, well, is not the best place to find well-thought-out opinions. I've seen a lot of the really dumb, racist, and sexist objections to Elementary, but then you get the other extreme of people who ( ... )

Yeah, seriously. It was fine in ASiP because it was the early days still; it was... worth a side-eye in TBB; it was pretty okay in TGG because Gatiss actually has some tact; but when S2 rolled around it got really frustrating and bothersome, IMO. I appreciate the Irene/John parallels, but John's constant need to reaffirm his heterosexuality to the world is neither amusing nor particularly making me like him (in that regard, anyway, because I adore John, just - not so much the way Moffat writes him sometimes). I was very glad that Gatiss more or less approached that issue by making him drop it for a lost cause in THoB.

I've seen a lot of the really dumb, racist, and sexist objections to Elementary, but then you get the other extreme of people who are determined to like it basically out of spite.Yeah, pretty much. Basically, anyone who's quick to judge a ( ... )

Okay, I'm going to need links to some of these fics...

, I don't doubt for one second that JLM and Lucy Liu will be great. Their faces are amazing, and their voices are pretty perfect - they're pretty much the main reason why I feel really hopeful for this show, because I'll want to like them in it, so I'll want to like it. If that makes sense.

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel. Tbh I'm always happy to see JLM in anything, I've had a little crush on him ever since I saw him in Mansfield Park about ten years ago. I honestly don't have much experience of Lucy Liu's acting, I think the only thing I've seen her in is Charlie's Angels, and I'm not going to judge anyone based on that :) But goddamn she has a fantastic face, and I really like what I saw in the preview, so.

This is the long, proper fic postcardmystery has written, and she's also done some shortfic on her tumblr here and here.

JLM was so good in Emma, as well. Favourite adaptationnnn.

Jane Austen was my first fandom, in the posting-on-message-boards, fic-reading, squeeing-about-adaptations sense, and I was pretty into it right up until a couple of years ago. I remember being slightly disappointed when he was cast (because I desperately wanted Richard Armitage for Mr Knightley) but god, that adaptation ended up being fantastic. And JLM was so, so good, guh.

I feel a rewatch coming on...

(and thanks for the fic links!)
