Although I agree to an extent, I have kicked people off my flist for being racist or, in one case, implying that women are to blame when they are raped. Similarly, if someone on my flist was openly against gay marriage and in the same breath castigated homosexuals (or transgendered, bi, etc), I'd boot them too.
There are some things that are too important to me to compromise on. My tolerance of someone ends when they start attacking those I care about, or attempting to remove my (or others') rights.
If it's a question of semantics (marriage vs civil unions as in your example), it would be a discussion. But if it's open criticism and bile spewing? Hell no.
I'd be surprised if she ever spewed bile. But I agree, if I start reading a bunch of hate and vitriol, then it's time to part ways.
It frightens me that no one seems to be mentioning that little gem Arkansas voted in - the one where non married couples can't adopt? I can think of one way to get around that if said couple were heterosexual, but it can't be avoided if the couple were same sex. It's vile.
